I knew Joe years ago when I worked for the Roanoke Times as head of its Southwest Virginia Bureau in Wytheville (my hometown). We agreed that we were almost certainly related, but had no idea how. Today (Sunday) I was able to trace that connection in Wayne Kirn's 1996 genealogy book. By my calculation, Joe and I were 5th cousins, once removed. We also had WWII Navy duty and radio connections in common. (I worked part-time at WYVE in the 1950's and WDNC-AM and WDCG-FM were affiliated with the Durham Herald Corporation of which I was vice president/secretary prior to my retirement in 1993.) Be all of this as it may, I remember Joe as being a thoroughly nice guy I would like to have known better! You have my deepest sympathy and will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.
