Michael Ray Sweat

Michael Ray Sweat, 53, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Veteran's Day, November 11, 2008. He was a proud veteran having served in the United States Army for 14 years, was a lifetime member of the DAV Lodge #3, and had a special place in his heart for all animals and especially horses and his beloved cat, Sophie. Preceding him in death was his father, Jesse Sweat Sr.; brother, Jesse Sweat Jr.; and stepfather, Linwood Cooper. His surviving family includes his mother, Iris McGee and husband, Don; wife, Betty Moorman Sweat; son, Michael Sean Sweat; daughter, Stephanie Josée Sweat; sister, Debra Lawson and husband, Raymond; stepsister, Becky Newsom and husband, Tim; sister-in-law, Sarah Eller and husband, Lowell; brotherin-law, Jimmy Cromer and wife, Gail; numerous aunts and uncles; numerous nieces and nephews, including Raymond Lawson and wife, Brandi, Brian Lawson, and Zachary Lawson; great-nieces, Tiffany Clark, Amberlee Dixon, and Erin Beard; and great-nephew, Zachary Beard. A celebration of Mike's life will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 15, 2008, in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem with the Rev. David Gellert officiating. The celebration will continue at Salem Presbyterian Church with a reception in honor of his life. His remains will be inurned 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at Arlington National Cemetery.
