Helen Dooley Obituary

Helen Johnson Dooley, 100, of Salem, passed away on Saturday, November 15, 2008. She was born in Botetourt County to the late J. T. and Lula Belle Johnson. A graduate of Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing, she was a registered nurse for 33 years. As a member of Salem Baptist Church, she was very active in the Philathea Sunday School class. She was also a charter member of the Forest Lawn Garden Club and a member of the Westchester Garden Club. She loved flowers and working in her yard and garden. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, R. T. (Bob) Dooley; four brothers; and three sisters. Her surviving family includes her daughter, Phyllis Butts; son, R. T. (Tom) Dooley and wife, Nancy, of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandchildren; 12 greatgrandchildren; sister-in-law, Betty Johnson, of Florida; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and greatnephews. The family wishes to thank the many wonderful caretakers at South Roanoke Nursing Home. The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2008, in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. The funeral service will follow at noon. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. The Rev. Everett Kier will officiate. Donations in her honor may be sent to either the Jefferson Hospital Nurse's Alumnae Association, at 5968 Lakemont Drive in Roanoke, Va. 24018 or to Salem Baptist Church. I got close to Helen at Ridgewood Gardens and we enjoyed many laughs. I admired her flowers her son sent her each month. She was a remarkable lady. Time and season for everything comes to mind.........
