Tyrone Charlton Obituary

Tyrone Melvin Charlton, 69, of Roanoke, Va., fondly known as "Stretch," "Slim," "Mr. C," Mr. "T," "Dad," and "Pops," was born June 8, 1939, in Radford, Va., to the late Lawrence and Ollie Snell Charlton. He was the second of four children. Tyrone entered into matrimony with Margie Carson Charlton on January 7, 1967, a union that produced three beautiful and adoring children.
He attended Christiansburg Institute in Christiansburg, Va. Tyrone was the first African-American to be appointed as a correction officer in a South Western Virginia correctional facility. He retired in 2001 from Virginia Field Unit 25 with over 28 years of dedicated service that was above the call of duty. While working at Unit 25 he was the first officer to organize sports on a correctional field unit as well as being the first African-American officer to work on a road unit. Tyrone loved to work and loved people. He was a faithful member and provided custodial service at High Street Baptist Church for over 17 years. Tyrone was a surrogate father to many of his children's friends and a big brother to many others.
Those left to mourn are his wife of 41 years, Margie M. Charlton; daughters, Karen (Eddie) Garrett, of Roanoke, Va., Mauricia (Fredrick) Murphy, of Fairburn, Ga., and Marie (Howard) Tucker, of Roanoke, Va.; son, Ricardo Hytower, of San Juan, Puerto Rico; brothers, Lawrence Charlton, of Palm Bay, Fla., Byron (Carolyn) Charlton, of Lorton, Va., and Charles (Janet) Charlton, of Johnson City, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Atia Howard, of Herndon, Va., Eleshia Garrett, Isiah Tucker, Kendrick Tucker, and Amanda Brown, of Roanoke, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The family extends special thanks to the many healthcare professionals who provided for his needs during his long illness, especially the Oncology department at Roanoke Carilion Hospital and MCV Massey Cancer Center in Richmond, Va. Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society of N.A., VA. Chapter, 2101 Executive Drive, Hampton, Va. 23666 in his name.
The family will receive friends from noon on Saturday, November 22, 2008, until service time. A funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. on Saturday at Simpson Funeral Home by Byron Charlton, the Rev. Gary Brown, Minister Fredrick Murphy and the Rev. Charles Charlton. Arrangements handled by Simpson Funeral Home, 540-366-0707.

Mrs. Charlton, Marie, Mauricia, and Karen,

I was saddened to hear about the passing of Mr. Charlton. I just began to smile and think about how such a nice person he was... The fond memories of the many softball games and teaching us how to pitch, to the "Go-Cart" that he would speed down the street in and even let us drive from time to time, and how dilligent he was driving his truck to work to Coyner Springs to provide for you all. All I could do was think back about the pleasant memories and smile.

I pray for the Lord to comfort your heart and strengthen you during this time and the times to come. God bless you all.

So sorry to hear of Tyrone's passing. Tyrone and my Dad were such good buddies - for years they kept in touch. I was shocked at his illness because he always seemed to be the picture of health. I hope that you all are coping well and have peace knowing that he is now with our Saviour.

Dear Charlton Family,

Your entire family has been a blessing to me for many, many years. I don't think you all know what it means to me to have another family that I know love and support me just as much as I love them. I loved "dad" like I loved my own Father. He was an awesome man and I will truly miss him. You all were there for me and my family during the loss of my Daddy and I will be there for you. I can tell you first hand that with the Lord and time this loss does get easier to bear.

Marie,
James and I will never forget how you supported us by being my Matron of Honor weeks ago and it was in the midst of everything that was going on with "dad". During your speech at our reception, you thanked me for being your friend. Well I want to THANK YOU- not only for being a lifetime friend and sister to me but for sharing your dad with me, for sharing the relationship that the two of you had and for sharing your entire family with me for all of these years. I want you to know that the pencil and notebook that I had to give to you back in the 3rd grade to get this relationship started was well worth it :) As always, If you all need ANYTHING I am only a phone call away. Love Always, Denise Brown Moore & The Brown Family

Marie and Mauricia--

I am very sorry to hear about your Daddy's passing. I thought the world of him. Growing up the way we all did, I felt more like y'alls little sister than neighbor. Both your parents always treated me that way...whether it was buying us cheese doodles (for y'all to suck off only the cheese!) or telling us to be quiet while we were practicing our dance moves to the BarKays. The Charlton house always felt like a second home to me. Your Daddy was a big reason why. I still remember the time that bat got into your downstairs and he chased it out or killed it in the yard or something. He was our hero! Anyway, my very warmest memories from childhood involve the Charlton's. As I said, your Daddy was a big part of that. I will always be thankful to him (and you all) for making me feel so at home.

I pray the Holy Spirit will comfort you and keep you during this most difficult time. Your father was an awesome man. You all were blessed to have him. Cling to the Lord and to each other and God will see you through this.

Love you guys!
