Rufus C. Hurt, Sr., 93, of Clayton, N.C., died on Tuesday, November 25, 2008. He was born on October 20, 1915, in Sanger, W.Va. Rufus was the former owner of Rufus Hurt Realty on Brambleton Ave. in Roanoke and a resident of Bent Mountain for many years. He was preceded in death by his daughters, Sarah Elizabeth (Sally) and Shirley Ann Hurt-Becker. Surviving members of his immediate family include his wife, Ruby Hurt; son, Rufus Hurt Jr.; and numerous grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, nieces and nephews. Rufus was an avid pilot, contractor and builder. He served his country in the Merchant Marines during World War II and was a former fire chief in Oak Hill, W.Va., where he made an unsuccessful run for Congress in 1946. It was Mr. Hurt's wish to be cremated and his ashes interred next to his daughter, Sally, in the family cemetery in Oak Hill. Services will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2008, at Wildwood Freewill Baptist Church in Garner, N.C. Flowers may be sent to the church at 5788 Cornwallis Road, Garner, N.C. 27529. Uncle Rufus,
I will always remember you for the kind gentleman that you were. You and Dad (George Lawrence) looked so much alike. I will miss knowing
you were there.
