Naomi Stewart Obituary

Naomi Ruth Gates Stewart, RN, 74, of Radford, Va., departed for her home in Heaven on Wednesday, December 3, 2008, after a brief bout with cancer. Born July 21, 1934, in Plasterco, Va., she died at home with family by her side. Ruth was preceded in death by her father, William Neal Gates, of Pulaski. She is survived by her mother, Vandell Elizabeth Smith Gates Minton, of Radford. Ruth is also survived by her husband of 53 years, Charles Wade Stewart Jr.; a son, Richard Alan Stewart, MD, and his wife, Ginger, of Charlottesville; a son, Charles Wade Stewart III, DDS, and his wife, Kathleen, of Hampton; a daughter, Julia Ann Stewart, of Ashburn; a son, William Neal Stewart, and his wife, Nanette, of Radford; six grandsons and four granddaughters, Andrew, Katey, and Christopher Stewart, of Charlottesville, Jake and Skyla Stewart, of Hampton, Danny and Carly Daly, of Ashburn, and Malcolm, Ronan, and Anneliese Stewart, of Radford. Also surviving is her brother, Harry Lee Gates, and his wife, Jean, of Pulaski; her sister, Maude Gates Brodd, of Dawsonville, Ga.; and nine nieces and nephews.
Ruth was dearly loved by her husband, children and grandchildren, her bridge buddies, nursing school classmates, fellow church members and a multitude of other friends. She was an active member of Circle #1 of the First Presbyterian Church of Pulaski, a member of the Round Dozen Club of Pulaski, a hard-working volunteer of the Community Yard Sale, a member of two bridge clubs, a member of the Good Neighbor Club, a member of the Pulaski Christian Women's Club and a founding member of the NRV Women's Connection (Christian Women's Club). She loved to be with people, as shown by her many various and charitable works. A Golden Hokie and holder of season tickets along with her husband Charles, Ruth was a passionate fan of Virginia Tech football and TechSideline.com, managed by her son, William.
Ruth excelled at her career chosen at age four as a Registered Nurse. A graduate of the Pulaski School of Nursing in 1954, she was the first head nurse of the first recovery room at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. A member of the first Coronary Monitoring Unit established at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, Ruth was the accompanying transportation nurse when one of Viginia's first heart transplant patients, Joseph Klett, was moved from Charlottesville to the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Charlottesville citizens will remember her as the caring, efficient office nurse of Dr. William Pollard, Dr. James Twyman, Dr. James Knight, and her son Dr. Richard Stewart. She will also be remembered as a teacher of geriatric care at Piedmont Community College, and a hard worker of the Charlottesville Daily Bread.
The family will receive visitors on Friday, December 5, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 815 Randolph Avenue, Pulaski. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church of Pulaski, 408 N. Jefferson Avenue. The Rev. Jeff Kackley and the Rev. David Dickerson will officiate. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or Pulaski's First Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund.

Will, I'm sorry about your Mom. When a parent is ill or any
loved one, it is hard to concentrate on anything. You do a
great job and I know she was very proud of you. Hang in
there.(Hokierodneync)

My condolences to all the Stewart family. I know of Will only through the website, but thought of my own mom as I read your reflections about your mom. My mom also passed away from cancer, 3-1/2 years ago. I remember vividly going to Va Tech games with my mom and my sister when I was young in the early 70's. One of my older brothers was Tech's nosetackle then. We also listened to away games on the radio. After college I moved to the Northeast, but always loved to talk to my mom on the phone at halftime while we were watching games on TV. Now I am with my family in West Africa, so we are back to listening to radio broadcasts, over the internet.

May our Lord Jesus Christ comfort you all as you grieve the loss of this dear woman.

Will and Family,

As one of the entries above states, I only know Will through his work on line. I do know enough through his writing to know that he comes from a very caring and compassionate family. It may be his business, but he goes out of his way to communicate in a personal way to everyone who asks an opinion or raises a cheer with him. Those qualities only come from folks that teach such genuine, homespun care and emotions. Mrs. Stewart surely must have been a large catalyst of it all.

May God's blessing and hand of comfort be with you all as you celebrate the life of the one who was such a special part of your lives

You have our condolences, your mom sounds like my mom who is 72 ,listen to the games on the radio or TV and tells the defense to intercept the ball when the ball is in the air or telling the opposing offense to fumble .your mom sound like one great person she will always be in our prayers . Will, Before the stadium was shuffled a few years ago we enjoyed sitting just in front of your parents in Section 16. We really enjoyed meeting your parents and agree with your TSL article on how special a person she was. She was very proud of you and the success you have made of Tech Sideline. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to to you and your family.

The Whole Stewart Gang -
As you all know, Ruth was an incredible person and friend to our family. She always had a smile on her face and made everyone feel so welcome in her company. I'm sorry I haven't spent as much time with her in the near past, but my time on Fifth Street, with you-all at our back door, has vast memories of good times. Ruth and Mary Alice will be getting together soon, having a chat about the good old days, all their kids and grandkids, and perhaps a bridge game. Your loss is felt by many. Please know the Davises are there if you need them.

My deepest & heartfelt sympathy go out to you and your family Dr. Stewart. If their is anything I can do for your please let me know. I heard amazing stories of your mom when I worked on South 6 but had no idea at the time that was your mother. " The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."
"May thoughts of all your mother meant
Of love she gave, of good times spent -
Bring you peace and comfort, too,
And keep your mother close to you.

With Deepest Sympathy
& Love
