Dear Janie,
I will always remember what Bert said so long ago.."If you left this world today, where would you go? The best you can hope for is to know your bags are packed and you will be READY to go".
Because of his great love of Christ and his sharing God's love with me , I too can know if I left this world today, my bags are packed and I am ready to go.
So always keep in mind you WILL be with him again..
I love you all.

Bert was one of the most wonderful men I have ever met. He always had a smile on his face. He was a wonderful example for Christ. I will always keep close to my heart that he married my mama and daddy and me and Cabell and he also baptized all of us and dedicated Rebecca to the church. I know he is in Heaven all his questions answered as well as being with his child and mother. No more pain and no more tears he is finally home. The influence he left behind was great and he touched so many lives. Sunday mornings will never be the same without seeing his smiling face and a hand extended to shake. I know God is proud of his child and the work he did while he was here. Many souls were won to Christ because of his dedication and devotion to God. Bert will be so missed and he was truly loved by many people.

To Pastor Bert's Family,
I want to thank you for sharing Pastor Bert with all of us at Summersett Baptist Church and all around the community. He was a lighthouse to me, and I will never, never forget him. He helped me through alot of things in my life by being my Pastor and friend for over 30 years. Even when he felt bad and hurting from his arthritis he went out into the community and visited the sick and one's who was in need. I will always remember his beautiful smile!!!! He could light the world up with his smile. I know he had said before for us all not the be sad when the Lord took him home but my heart is breaking missing him so much!!!! My heart really goes out to his wife Janie , and his children, grandchildren and all his family and our Church family cause we have lost a lighthouse to us all. We will see you again Pastor Bert in Heaven so you have a goodtime until we all get there and tell my dad & mom hello for me!!!!! As I told you everytime I seen you---I LOVE YOU PREACHER BERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To Mrs. Janie, family and church family,
Bert was my sunshine every Sunday and Wednesday night. My time at church was not complete if I didn't get my kiss and hug from him before I left. I have so many memories of him and I miss him so very much, as I know all of Bert's sheep do. Our shepherd has gone but will never be forgotten. He will always be with us in our hearts.
Bert was such a wonderful person and so sincere in all he did. He has been the rock of our church for so long it is going to be hard to move forward even though I know we must. He would be so upset with us if we did not. He has told all of us many times not to be sad for him when he left this world, that he was ready to go. He would want everyone to be ready to go. So, anyone who reads this, know that God is with us and that we too can be with Bert in paradise someday if we have accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior. He is there waiting for all of us and I'm sure Bert will be there to meet us at the gates when we arrive. I can't wait to see him again and I know he'd love to see all of us with him someday!
Love to you all and with my deepest sympathy,
Tina C Reynolds

Janie and Family,
Bert was a very special man. Some of us were talking about him awhile back stating that he was not only a preacher, he was a loyal pastor. He was there for all of us, whether we went to church all of the time or not, when we were sick or sad, or any relative ,he would make sure he was there to comfort us. He was very special.
Our very deepest sympathy,
Steve, Charlotte, Allen, Johanna, Keith and Julia Shelton

Janie and family...We are so sorry this happened. The funeral was really nice but so sad. I don't think I've ever been more sad over someone's death then Berts. WE are proud to have had him as our pastor over the years and we are so thankful for all he has taught us. It is going to be so hard to ever get over him and replace him because that is impossible. He can't be replaced. I know we will adventually find a new pastor but their will never be one as good as Bert. I have been in church since I was born and I've heard hundreds of preahers and really good ones too, but there was no one like Bert. I only knew him close to 7 years, but it feels like forever. He was the easiet preacher I've ever seen to listen to. He made everything so simple to understand and your mind never wanderend off because he always kept your attention. He preached the Bible and wasn't scared to preach on Hell like some preachers today are. He lead so many to Christ and my girls loved him so, so much. Jailyn will always remember him, I hope, but Marihlyn of course won't. I just think of all the things they could have learned from Bert and I know how much he loved us too. We will stick together as a church but I'm going to tell you that for us it is going to be hard going in Summersett without seeing Bert because he was always there, smiling! He barley ever missed. He done his job so well and was so passionate about it. We will never forget him and how he was the greatest Christian man. I know how hurt you are and we are praying for you. We love you Janie and we want to be there for you in any way we can. I am just praying for strength to accept someone else but it will be hard. There are so many memories and we will always have them and I can't wait to see him again someday!

To the Johnson Family,
I offer my regrets over Bert Johnson's death. He had been a presiding spirit among the ministers of the association for years as well as in his church. His graceful manners and spirit will be missed.

I was so sorry to hear of our losing Rev. Bert. I remember so well our days of playing softball and the Christian fellowship that we all enjoyed so much. Bert was an icon in our community and will be sorely missed by all. But we can rest in the assurance that he has gone to a better place to receive his rewards for his good work here on Earth. Your family will remain in my thoughts and prayers.

Mrs. Johnson and Family,
Our hearts were saddened as we learned of Brother Johnson's passing, but we know that Heaven is indeed a better place for it. I remember him bringing me a can of special formula for our youngest daughter when she was born, just because he knew we needed it and couldn't afford it at that time. Never have we met a truer Christian than Brother Johnson. He will be missed by all that he met and those that never had the opportunity to know him has experienced a great loss. God be with you in this time of you loss, we will remember you and yours in our prayers. We truly loved Brother Johnson.

I was so saddened to hear of Bert's illness and death. He helped my family through so many difficult times especially with the sudden deaths of Dad & Anthony. He could always make one smile and had such a heartfelt handshake and hug-his heart was always flowing over with love. Janie, Nancy, Deborah, & family-you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Nancy, I was so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. You and your family meant the world to me growing up and there was never a time when I would come home and have the priviledge of seeing him that he wouldn't give me a big hug and always make me feel special. He truly was a man of God, and he is with him now. My thoughts are with you my friend, and may you find comfort knowing your Dad's time on earth was well spent in the service of the Lord touching many people.

To my Johnson/Fontaine family:
No words can begin to explain what Mr. Bert meant to me. He was sooo important to me because:
He gave the best hugs...
He always made me feel special....
He gave THAT smile freely and made me smile back....
He gave me the foundation for my salvation....
He gave me the example of a true God filled Christian....
He cared for my dad's salvation and was his dear friend and for that I will always be eternally grateful....
He shared his love for God and others without any thought of self...
He was the epitamy of a father figure for my big brother and a dynamite grandfather to all of those boys....
He loved us all with unfailly love just like Jesus would do.....
For all of these things and so much more I will forever be thankful to God for allowing me to have had the oppotunity to know and love Bert Johnson....
I have truly been blessed and have been made a better person for having known him for these 40 or so years....
I am so glad that Jimmy and Mr. Bert and daddy and Randall can now go fishing....
Love to you all....gina

Mrs Johnson & Family,
I was saddened to hear of the death of "Brother Bert" as I always called him. He was a dear man and pastor and will be greatly missed by the church and his many friends such as me. He was with both of my sisters when they had surgery and showed his compassion for our family at their deaths. He spoke with my sister Nell just recently about her salvation and would have loved to have conducted her funeral this past Monday but he was very ill himself and was in our prayers at the funeral. The angels in heaven rejoice tonight at his arrival and I know he will be missed but heaven is a better place and Brights and Pittsville and surrounding areas was certainly a better place because of Brother Bert. May god bless each of his family in this time of loss and you are in my prayers.

Bert was one of the finest persons that the Lord allowed to be a part of our lives. Though we were a member of Sommerset Baptist Church for only a short time, Bert became a friend for life. May God bless each of Bert's family members in this sorrowful time. May the family remember that Bert is now receiving God's eternal rewards and even though we all shall miss him, that we that "know" God shall join him some day in God's eternal home that Jesus returned to Heaven to prepare for us.
With our love and condolences to the family.

I am deeply saddened by Bert's passing. Although I am not a member of Summersett Baptist, the Dalton side of my family is. I have always felt a loving connection there. Bert was a gracious and kind person, and I could always count on him visiting my Mom during her many stays in the hospital. The world will be a little less brighter without him in it. I know that I will miss him and that big smile. May God bless you through these rough days ahead.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Ms. Johnson and Family,
As you know Mr. Johnson was very dear to me. He shared alot of my happy memories with me and he helped me through some troubled times. I will always remember that smile. I have seen him two or three times recently and knew he had been sick, but he had that smile and wanted to know how my mom and I were doing and still could give a good bear hug.
My heart goes out to you. You are in my prayers. Hold on to those memories.
Love You,
