Dear Christley Family, I just heard about Gil and had to contact you. Chris Campbell just notified me about the death. He was a kind and gentle man to me and my family. Chris loved Gil as well as your family. He reminded me about the time that Chris came to your house and with Gil waited up most of the night to use his bow and arrows to get a mole. They waited up all night and talked about Chris and his future. Chris loved Gil and how good he was with the youth of the Ward. Gil made the cast of Chris's back when he fractured his spine. He worked with him to make certain that the cast worked well and Chris could continue playing basketball. Gil treated him as his own son and we all remember him and his fine family. Love you all. I apologize for the late note, but I just learned of Gil's death. Please accept my sympathy. He was a good man and his children should be proud of their father.

Gil was one of my best friends and teammates at Andrew Lewis High School in Salem, Virginia. He played next to me on the offensive line and was one of the stars of our Virginia state championship football team in 1962. His wonderful personality and values made him a favorite of my mother and father and he spent a lot of time in our home. Last night my father reminded me that Gil was my only friend who would ride his horse to our house.

Since both of us left Virginia after high school, I didn't see Gil often after graduation. I do have a wonderful memory of our team's 25th reunion, when I picked Gil up at the Atlanta airport. He was brave enough to let me fly him to Salem and even braver to let me fly him back to Atlanta for his trip home. All his teammates loved Gil and we will miss him very much.

Dear Christley Family:
We are so sad that Gil passed away so unexpectedly. He was always a good and loyal friend to all he knew. His wonderful influence was felt among all the youth he worked with and the fabulous family that he and Linda raised. We love you all, and we are so sorry for your loss. Eric really loved Gil.
