Richard Treffeisen Obituary

Richard E. (Dick) Treffeisen, 89, of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at Liberty Commons in Jacksonville, N.C. He was born in New Rochelle, N.Y., on April 22, 1919, the son of the late Edward and Anita Berges Treffeisen. Dick was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth Mercer Treffeisen. Dick graduated from New York University in 1941 with a BS degree in electrical engineering. He was initially employed by the Westinghouse Corporation in Pittsburgh, Pa. In 1943 he was drafted as a civilian engineer by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Manhattan District. Dick spent the next several years with the Manhattan Project (Atomic Bomb) with assignments in New York City, Boston and Oak Ridge, Tenn. In 1946 he joined the General Electric Company taking him to Lynn, Mass., Schenectady, N.Y., Roanoke, Va., and Chapel Hill, N.C. He remained with GE until his retirement in 1982. After retirement, he relocated to North Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he was an active member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and the North Myrtle Beach Rotary Club. Dick was a long-time amateur radio operator (K4HOG) and a lifetime member of The American Philatelic Society. He was also a lifetime member of The National Society of Professional Engineers. Survivors include a daughter, Anne Lyon Stroud, of Jacksonville, N.C.; a son, Dr. Philip Alan Treffeisen and wife, Doris, of New York City; sisters, Miriam T. Friend and Irene T. Payne; and grandchildren, Sarah and Hunter Lyon, and Elsa and Eric Treffeisen. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2008, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in North Myrtle Beach with Dr. Wilmot T. Merchant officiating. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium. Memorials may be made to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 801 11th Ave., North Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29582 or to the North Myrtle Beach Rotary Club Foundation, P.O. Box 823, North Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29597-0823. An online guest register is available at www.msfh.net McMillan-Small Funeral Home is serving the family.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. "Tref" was a special guy, Charlotte and I enjoyed working with him at GE Salem. And saw him at the yard sales at his church in Myrtle Beach. He will be missed.
