To the Johnston family,

I was so shocked to hear of Rik's passing. He called me just a few months ago. We had the most wonderful conversation. Rik had a way of making me laugh and smile every time we talked.
It's been 20 years since I moved from Blacksburg but Rik and I always managed to stay in touch. Rik always made our phone chats seem like we had just talked or seen each other the day before. I will missing visiting with him whenever I'm in Blacksburg.
My heart goes out to each of you as you travel this difficult road.
Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I send out my prayers and sympathy for Rik's family. High school was so many years ago, but the memories are as fresh as if it were only yesterday. Rik was always making the space around him bright and I regret that I won't see him again until I get to Heaven.

It is with sadness that I write to express my sorrow to learn about Rik. I too used to hang out on Progress Street and love the memories of my childhood friend. We were so happy to run into each other at Wilco 10-11 years ago and enjoyed playing "catch-up" on news.

It is a happy day in heaven for the saints to share in Rik's joyful love and laughter - but a sad one for us who remain.

May God's love and caring friends and family comfort you during this difficult time. My prayers are with you!

Rik was a caring and kind soul -- always cheerful and loved laughter. He especially lighted up talking about his niece, whom he adored. His care for his family, his pride in his yard, his devotion to his work -- all evidence of his generous spirit. He will be missed.
