James William Burks Jr.

James Burks Obituary

James (Jim) William Burks Jr. passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2009. Jim was born in Roanoke, Va., February 4, 1938, to the late James W. Burks, Sr. and the late Missie W. Burks, who both preceded him in death. Jim was a 1955 graduate of Lucy Addison High School. He graduated Lincoln University in Pennsylvania in 1959. He continued his education at UVA, Roanoke College, Northwestern University and Lynchburg College. Jim served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. He was the first African American in Norfolk and Western Railroad's management trainee program, retiring from Norfolk Southern Corp in 1998. Jim served on a host of public service committees in the City of Roanoke and the Commonwealth, as Chairman or Vice Chairman of many. While a student at Lincoln University, Jim was inducted into Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Jim was one of thirteen Charter Members of Sigma Pi Phi Boule, Beta Phi Boule chapter, founded in 1983. Jim was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1997 and faced this diagnosis with his usual hard charging attitude, never asking "why me?" He always had a smile on his face and kept moving forward, not allowing things to get him down. He was always concerned with the well-being of others. Even as his illness progressed, Jim continued to be a role model to others as he demonstrated his usual grace. Jim is survived by his wife, Janice Kasey Burks; son, J. Darryl (Danielle) Burks; brother, Beverly Wayne (Vanessa) Burks, Sr.; stepsister, Hazel Shelton; aunt, Nannie Bowen; uncle, James Wade; sister-in-law, Brenda K. Peaks; special cousin, Ruth (Bernard) Robertson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held at Loudon Ave. Christian Church at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2009. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Friends may call on Wednesday afternoon for viewing at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. Condolences may be sent to www.HamlarCurtis.com. In reminiscing about guys in the Chestnut Ave. corridor in which we grew up James indeed comes to mind. That corridor also included at times the likes of the Cheatum's, the Holland's, the Dean's, the Chubb's to name a few.In that light, the Dillon family, (Dorothy, Mary Lee, John(JM), Jackie, Warren Lewis) formally of 203 Chestnut Ave. NW wish to extend our condolences to the Burks family with the hope that they will cope with these trying times.

To the family of Mr. James Burks, at various phases of my life he served as: my coach, sponsor, mentor, father figure/role model and good friend. We were truly blessed to have a man like him available to shape our development as young African-American men. His gracious, dignified manner was a beacon of light and hope for us.

He was steadfast and unwavering in his belief and demands that young African-American men be developed in a comprehensive manner, one that involved; academics, athletics, strong morals, community activism and leadership as critical components. Mr. Burks believed in setting the standards high and challenging us constantly to meet or exceed expectations.

His impact still influences my life today, both personally and professionally. Conversations with him still resonate and inspire me to live my life in a righteous and forthright manner, and give back to my community. We were fortunate to have a strong, educated and professional African-American man to claim as our role model.

Mr. Burks was a tremendous leader in our community, willing to be engaged and speak out on issues which greatly enhanced the success of African-Americans. His home and heart were always open for young men to gather, discuss/debate and share the timeless rituals of developing as men. One of his greatest strengths was the willingness to assist other young men besides his son in their development and associated success.

Mrs. Burks and my brother Darryl, thank you for sharing your husband and your father, you were unselfish in allowing him to spend time with me. For that I am eternally grateful.

Webster's defines grace: to confer dignity or honor on; marked by kindness and courtesy; easy approachability; characterized by charm, good taste and generosity of spirit, warmth and heartiness. If you knew Mr. Burks these words define him perfectly.

May he rest in peace and know that by living and sharing his life unconditionally, he impacted and nurtured the lives of numerous young African-American men, a job well done.

Godspeed Mr. Burks and thank-you.

Sincerely,

Michael A. Mundy

Darryl,

Our Prayers are with you, your mom, Beverly and all of your extended family members. Mr Burks hand extended so far into my life with his never ending words of council. Especially as I would stop by to see you and he would be sitting at the kitchen table. He would always take the time to ask how I was doing as well as my family. His sincere interest in my education since HS would always be a topic that would hold me at the top of the stairs. And boy sometimes I was really trying to get past him and down those steps to the basement. His life lessons that he shared as a coach and cheerleader will always be apart of my internal makeup. I thank God for your Mom, Dad and family.
Darryl, you have given so much to those you call your friend, that it is evident that Mr. Burks will continue to be proud of you as I am proud of you and more so, proud to call you my friend. I love you and thank you!
Its hard during this time to understand the mysteries of God, but continue to talk to Him and ask Him all the questions your have and take time to listen to His answers.
Rest in the hope of Gods' promises to those that love Him. I believe that He will take care of you and Mrs Burks! I believe that He will in time, comfort those of us that will miss him.
Mr. Burks hand, that held a beacon light, a light that meant many things to me and many others will continue to shine as we/I carry that light and share that light with others we love.
