Kay, Sarah, Leigh and Family,
Jerry was so very special. He and I hung out together in high school and had so many little inside jokes. He was just so funny and cute and crazy. Often times, years later, I would see him on a visit back to Buchanan, and he would always say "do you remember the time..." and we would laugh like two kids. He was a wonderful friend... no, more like a brother to my own brother, Mike and our mother, Lois, adored him. I will miss hearing of his antics. He would visit Mike and they would start talking about old times and then would call me on the telephone with some silly question about high school and Jerry would be in the background saying "ask her about so and so"... Mike and I will miss Jerry so very much. We know he is in the Best Place now and will have no more suffering. I would like to think that he is looking down on us and saying "Hey, you remember when we..."
Yes, Jerry we do remember. We could never forget you. In time, we will get over our grief and be able to deal with losing you. It seems like God takes the best ones early and He makes no mistakes.
God Bless You all

One can fall in love many times during a lifetime but the first love always holds a special place in our hearts. We met as teenagers on the bumper cars ride at Lakeside Amusement Park. We dated through high school, became engaged and made plans for the future. And then, shortly after graduation, my dad passed away unexpectantly. I was in turmoil and restless so I diverted from that path we had planned and took a different road. We parted as friends. Jerry had a solid foundation, he knew who he was and where he wanted his life to go so he stayed on the same road, confident in his values and always faithful and true to his family, his friends, his town and his Cowboys and Wahoos. Our paths crossed from time to time over the years, he was a ref at my son’s game at Glenvar, he supervised a Varney job at the airport where I work. When we saw each other we reminisced and laughed about the old days and caught up on our families. We would compare notes on our sons who were close in age, shaking our heads on their latest antics. We knew in our hearts they would grow up to be responsible young men, and they have. Jerry was proud of William and loved him dearly.. you could hear it in his voice and see the pride in his eyes each time he spoke of him. Just like his Chevelle SS, he never gave up on Jason and in the end, he saw in him the man he wanted him to be. And he was happy with the life he and Kay had built together. He found his true love. Just last October when we last spoke on the phone, he told me over and over that Kay was his Angel but he didn’t tell me the cancer had returned. I called him in November and left a message but he didn’t call back. I should have tried calling again. Jerry, I will miss your laugh, your voice, your face. I will miss your corny jokes. I will still think of you, as I always have, each time I read about football and basketball at James River, every time I watch the Dallas Cowboys and any time I visit Buchanan those memories from our youth will touch my heart and I will whisper your name.

My deepest sympathy and love to all of you.

Jerry was a lot of fun to be around and I enjoyed the friendly discussions that we had over the years about the Hokies and his beloved Wahoos. When I started coaching recreational basketball, he was a source of good advice and always seemed to have a story to share related to whatever I might ask him about. I worked with Jerry for 10 years at Varney and in that time made a good friend. He was a skilled plumber and mechanic and I could count on his expertise and knowledge to help get the work done on the projects we worked on together.
My God bless his family. They will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I have not known Jerry very long, but I thought highly of him. Working with him and getting to know him was an honor. I know he fought a good fight and he will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with Jerry's family as they struggle to go forward without him present. It will be a hard, but take one day at a time and rely on God for strength and comfort.
