James Linwood Chittum Sr., 84, of Boones Mill, Va., and formerly of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2009. James was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin Chittum Sr. and Mary Susie Chittum; brother, Russell Chittum; and a granddaughter, Katherine McClure Armstrong. James retired from Norfolk and Western Railway. James enlisted in the Army at age 17 and was one of the few lucky men to survive the storming of the beaches of Normandy and was in combat in both France and Germany. During his tour in France, James met and fell in love with his darling wife, Denise, they had just celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary, on Monday January 26th. After four years, he enlisted in the Navy Seabees, where he stayed until 1963. James was a member of the Lakeland Masonic Lodge No. #190, a member of the American Legion and a VFW and World War II Veteran where he earned the bronze medal. James is survived by his wife of 63 years, Denise Cabrerizo Chittum; children, Yvonne and husband, Joe McClure, Dorie and husband, William Howard, Lynwood Chittum Jr., and Bonnie Conner; grandchildren, Denise Clifton, MaryAnn Sloane, Whitney Hartsook, Phillip Chittum, Anna Conner, and James and Jarad Montana; great-grandchildren, Joseph Clifton, Keeley and Korbin Hartsook, Harrison and Peyton Sloane, and Jackson and Adam Armstrong; and brothers, Harry L. Chittum and Alvin (Doodle) Chittum and wife, Arline. Funeral services will be held noon on Friday, January 30, 2009, at Oakey's South Chapel with the Rev. Rick Elmore officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 29, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel. Please, no flowers. Daddy never liked them he said "flowers reminded him of a funeral." Instead you could make a donation to any SPCA. He was known for his wit and love for animals. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel, 540-989-3131.

My sweet daddy,
You will always be my hero. Your heart of gold, quick wit, laughter, compassion and war stories will remain with me forever. I know Katherine was waiting for you along with everyone you have loved and lost in the past. Your pain and suffering has been taken away and God will make you well again. I'm so greatful for all the time we have spent together and I can asure you through me :) your legacy will live on. You were the best daddy anyone could ever ask for and I thank God, he made me your daughter. Like momma always said, "you are just like your father." Yes, I am and I will continue to be -- and proud of it :)
I love you daddy. Enjoy your new life. Until we see again, you will remain in my heart and thoughts.
Love ya
Dorie
