Michael Dodd Obituary

Michael Dew Dodd, 58, of Disputanta, passed away on January 30, 2009. He was born May 31, 1950 in Covington, Virginia. He was the son of the late Homer Davis Dodd, and was also preceded in death by his sister, Susan Childs Dodd Altizer. Mr. Dodd was a veteran, having served in the United States Navy from 1969 through 1974. Once discharged he returned to Covington, where he owned and operated Dodd's Florist, which included a florist, gift shop, and restaurant. In 1985, he relocated to the Petersburg area to work with K-Mart as a department manager. In 1991, he began a career at Wal-Mart Distribution Center 6023 in Sutherland, Virginia. During his eighteen year tenure, he held positions in the Asset Protection Department, Traffic Department, and since 1995, he was a member of the Human Resource Team. Michael loved to play the organ and piano, and served as the Minister of Music, and head organist at several local churches, most recently as the organist at Trinity United Methodist Church in Petersburg. He was a member of the Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church. Michael was also a member of Moose Lodge #610 in Covington, Virginia. Survivors include, his mother, Ruby Childs Dodd; a brother, Jeff and wife, Candi Dodd, of Vinton, Va.; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; and several close friends, Lewis Smith, of Roanoke, Va., Carl Owens and Joel Washington, Williamsburg, Va., and his Wal-Mart family at DC 6023. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at Second Baptist Church, Petersburg, with the Rev. Dr. Gerald Miller, and the Rev. Dr. Joseph Lewis officiating. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Covington, Virginia. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Roanoke Rescue Mission, or Crater Community Hospice. Arrangements by the Petersburg Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 3935 S.
