I was shocked to learn of Bernie's untimely death. We were buddies and our parents close friends from kindergarten through graduation at Roanoke Catholic. Then we went our separate ways for most of our lives. As Sam Assaid said in his comments in this book - for 13 years the nuns roll call was "Agee, Albert and Assaid" - when trouble loomed the order was often "Albert, Assaid and Agee". Those memories are still alive and it is difficult to accept that one of the three A's is not answering the roll call any longer. Bernie was a true fun guy and a dear friend to many as witnessed by the notes in this book. To his family, my condolences for your loss.

Dearest Bonnie,

I have thought about you and your family so much since the loss of your dear brother. I am Kay Stephenson's niece, and I felt like I knew Bernie from hearing so much about him from Kay and Katie. What a dear man he was.....He was such an influential person in Katie's life. Full of kindness, love, and humor. He will surely be missed. I wanted to make sure you knew what an impact he had on someone who had never even met him.......love and blessings to you and your family.

My brother, Bernie, was the best big brother in the whole world!! Bernie moved in with us in Jan. of 2008. I considered his being with us a GIFT! I am very thankful to God for the time he and I had. Bernie was like a brother to Ron. Few people can have that close a friendship with a sibling. We talked about our childhood a lot. We talked about all of the different personalities in our family. We loved to play scrabble together! Every day since he left his earthly life I have received cards from people who he had done something wonderful for.. just wanting to let me know. He had a larger than life smile. His sense of humor was a healing force in my life. My grandchildren and children were able to connect with him on a level that most neices and great-nephews and great-neices never can. The horses down the road will miss him too. He was always cutting up carrots or apples, he knew which horse liked which treat the most! When he moved in he announced that the kitchen was his. He always cooked extra food to share. The only time he allowed me to cook was if we were taking a meal to a sick neighbor or to a family who lost a loved one. He was not only my brother he had become my best friend. Everywhere I look, I see his touch. He fed the bluebirds every morning year round. He would blow the whistle and the birds came almost to him. He kept the feeders filled and knew all the birds by their species. He was very intellegent, and handsome! He treated everyone with respect. His dog Rocky is still with me. My memories will have to sustain me. I think that I will always miss him! You are in Heaven now fishing, and cooking, and serving at the best table my friend! I will see you again bro. I love you my dear sweet friend and brother!! Your baby Sis, Bonnie.

I have only known Bernie for the past few years. I met him when he moved in with Bonnie and Ron and became Bonnie's sidekick. One thing I know for sure is that Bonnie was able to experience "brotherly love" in a way that most of us never do. It was so obvious how much Bernie loved Bonnie. Not many brothers would center their lives around a sister for even a few days. You could tell that Bernie and Bonnie really enjoyed every minute they spent together. They had fun whether they were feeding the blue birds, working in the yard, shopping,
delivering furniture, driving to doctors appointments, driving to meet the "girlfriends"; really they found joy in all their time together. Bonnie, I know you miss this "one of a kind brother", but I am so thankful that you both had the concentrated time together that most of us do not get to experience with our brothers. We have all been blessed by the presence of this man in your life and in our lives. I will never forget his sparkling blue eyes and the kindness he always showed to your "girlfriends". I am so happy that I have had the opportunity to know Bernie. He was truley a special man and a special brother to Bonnie. God Bless!

Bernie, I can't believe your gone. I love you and I will miss you so much. You were such an important part of my life for so long. You were always there for me, in good times and bad. We butted heads a lot but I learned great values that I've passed on to my boys. Josh is the man he is today because of you and I thank you for that. As long as we are all here on this earth you will be alive in us. When I listen to my oldies I know you will be right there, When I'm in the kitchen, I know you will be there too. So, see, you are a part of everything. We will never forget you and the big part you played in our lives. No one could ever take your place. I will miss you, Bernie. Thank you for loving me like I was your own and being my DAD.

Bernie, I love you and I'm gonna miss you so much. You were my DAD even though not by blood. You raised me the way you thought was best and even though we butted heads at times, I knew you were right and that everything you said or did was in my best interest. My boys loved you so much. You instilled great values in me and you were the best role model for Josh. He is a wonderful man today because of you. Thank you for that. I will miss you so much. I love you Bernie

Warren and Family,
I was so shocked and very sad when I heard about Bernie's passing. Words aren't enough, nor do they come the way you want them to at a time like this. Bernie was so good to me, especially when it came to cooking. He always made my favorite: pinto beans and some kind of hot peppers to go along with them. He would get me to try different kinds of peppers, just to see if there was one I couldn't eat. He, Glenda, Warren and I would eat, drink, and dance. He always told me "quit trying to lead and just follow me." He was like that, a leader in everything he did, and the best at it. I will miss knowing that he isn't on this earth, but I will smile when I think of him.
Love,

Bernie, You were not always the easiest person to get along with. We had our times, but you were always there when I needed you and I will miss that the most. You will always be with me if not in my thoughts, then through my son, Josh, thank you for making him the man he has become today. You also instilled, within me, great values. I haven't always followed them, but you always knew that I would correct my mistakes and right my wrongs. You never turned your back on me. I love you, Bernie, I will miss you, so very much.

I remember one hot summer day at Bernie and Glendas' house on the hill a big cook out. My mom, Margaret Ann and Stepfather Rodney Price, were good friends with them and I was best friends With Denita and Jamie. I ask for his secret family recipe for a marinade he used for his ribeye steaks. Bernie looked at me and said if I told you the recipe I would have to kill you. To this day I never could get that recipe but that was the best darn steak I've eating to the day. Bernie and I would pick on each other as he had a great sense of humor. I will miss him and will always know he is in a better place. Shantel Overstreet Ramey

It was a pleasure and priviledge to have worked so many years with Bernie. Although we worked on different districts, we had many times we would meet at our reporting place and share views and opinions of the job we were doing. One the the ultimate compliments paid to Bernie was what a prominent trainmaster once said..."as long as i have Bernie on the south end and you on the north end, i have nothing to ever worry about".....and as we all know, Bernie was very dedicated to his work and was "the best" at it. Much as I feel he was in life itself. Again Bernie, it was a pleasure and priviledge to have know you.

To the Albert family I would just say that I am sorry for you folks. It is a loss for the family, But what a gain it is for Heaven. I never had the pleasure of meeting this gentleman , although I did have the opportunity of meeting his daughter Deena and getting to know her quite a number of years ago. I just felt compelled to let you folks know that Benard is now in the arms of the gentle sheppard, our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. So that, you can take comfort in. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. God bless, Gene Henegar, Jr. [email protected]

For Bernard’s family:

I’ve posted a few pictures of Bernard, two are when we first met. We were 20 then, it’s been some years. The road I traveled with Bernard was not smooth and soon we went on to lead our separate lives. But in the past few years, we had made our peace with each other, and I will always be grateful that we did.
Bernard had a bigger than life personality that was evident wherever he went. He needed to be giving and doing for other people all along the way.
Because of Bernard, I have been blessed with the two most precious daughters in the world. I could never forget him because he is alive in our two girls. Deena has his beautiful eyes and his comical wit. Lynez has his enthusiasm and energy and his “Type-A, I’ll just do everything” personality. Both Deena and Lynez have his outgoing personality and also, are always there to help others and have the same caring concern that he had.
I’m going to be thinking of Bernard often in the days to come. I will be imagining him fishing and joking with Barry because this was one of the things that he loved. And because I feel that he is doing what he loved and that he is happy and at peace.

His name means "strong, brave, bear" and famous saints bore this name. I can hear his laughter at the part about the saints! Anyone who knew him would agree that he was indeed a strong, and brave man. There were many special things about Bernie, but for me it was his wit and sense of humor that were over the top. He could put a smile on the faces of everyone around him. He could dish it out but he could also take it. I had known about Bernie for many years from his sister Bonnie who is my dear friend. I was fortunate to actually get to know him when he moved to Lake Gaston. I will miss those twinkling eyes and that warm smile. Many times when I called for Bonnie , Bernie answered and he was cooking dinner. I'd say, "well old man what's for dinner". His response would be "well, old lady get your self up here and find out. He is the only man that could say "old lady" to me and still be standing! The heart is never prepared for such a loss, but my life is better for having him as a friend. I will forever cherish him for who he was and what a good "bud" he was to both Bonnie and Ron. My thoughts and prayers are with them and the rest of the family.

Bernie was a wonderful person, Father, Grandfather and friend. Who I will miss greatly. Bernie was my father not by blood, flesh or bones but by choice. I will never say goodbye, for as long as I live he will live in my heart.

To Bernie's Family

We were privileged to recently know Bernie while he was staying with Bonnie and Ron at Lake Gaston. My daughter Katie and I were frequent overnight guest. When Bernie knew "Big Red" and "Little Red" (his pet names for us) were coming, he always wanted to know what we wanted him to cook! Of course the answer was "Bernie we don't care because we know whatever you cook will be great"! We of course were never disappointed while eating those delicious meals he prepared. The first time Little Red met Bernie he was in the Kitchen cooking, he welcomed her and commented on her beautiful red hair and of course teased her about about being 13 years old, the way only Bernie could TEASE! Bernie had tucked a Kitchen towel into his jeans, the towel hung down to his thighs, he used the towel to wipe his hands. Katie looked at him, laughed at his Teasing and said "Bernie, nice skirt you have on" Well for the first time I'd ever met him, he was speechless, and of course just fell in love with his "little Red". We will miss him terribly! His great wit/humor, his wonderful dinners, playing scrabble, watching him give "Sis" Bonnie a hard time and teasing her endlessly. I have never seen a Man that took such good care of his sister, loved her and always welcomed her Girl Friends. Bernie was a true Gem of a Gentleman. We are so sadden by Bernie's sudden death and can't imagine how hard this must be for the family. Please know that the lives of "Big Red" and "Little Red" have been touched and enriched by Bernie. His love, wit and friendship will never be forgotten.

To all the Alberts, Bernie was my oldest cousin, I remember growing up with summers at Aunt Mary, his mom, on Bent Mountain. He was quiet, polite, funny, and I thought, very cute. He was always with my Uncle Bernard, coming in from work on the railroad N&W. Bernie, you are at peace. You were a good son, brother, father and friend. The family and world will miss you, as I will too. God bless you and God bless your family.

Dear Warren and Family,
I know your hearts are broken. Bernie was a wonderful man and the truest friend. I will always remember Bernie's visits after Daddy (John) died. He would stop by the Inn when he'd come to Roanoke to check on us. Bernie would stand at the end of the bar, giving that beaming smile he had, and just hold his arms out. You couldn't help but just run to him. He'd give me a big hug and always say, "I know you miss him. I do, too." Before long he was telling some of their crazy railroad stories and would have you laughing. Bernie always knew the right thing to say. I'm sure he and Daddy are out fishing right now! We were all blessed to have known Bernie. He played a big part in many people's life. Hold on to those wonderful memories...now they are your greatest treasures!
With much love,

The world is a much poorer place with the tragic loss of Bernie. He was my first cousin, about the same age as I am, and we went to the same high school. During my mother's declining years he was a godsend to us, as he did all the chores for her that we couldn't do, living far away. Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.

I am so sorry for your loss. I only met Bernie a few times, but I know he had a kind heart. He brought us food to your house when you bragged on a macaroni dish he made so well.

To all the family, I am so so sorry to hear about Bernie's passing. As a first cousin, I will also miss him when we have times when we all get together. He was just a great all around person. It will take time to adjust but God will be there and He alone can ease the hurt and emptiness you feel. Time eases the hurt, but the memories remain and that will carry you through the lonely times. I pray for each one of you to have comfort in others prayers and friendship at this time.
