Frances Garst Obituary

Frances Salome Stoutamire Garst, 88, of Salem, Va., passed away Friday, March 6, 2009. She was born January 5, 1921, in Salem, Va., daughter of the late John Christian and Etta E. "Bess" Stoutamire. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Winfred "Bud" Joseph Garst; and two sisters, Elizabeth Sellers and Margaret Fenner. Frances was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. A life long member of College Lutheran Church, Frances was a faithful altar guild and Lutheran Women's Circle member. Frances enjoyed her family, bridge club friends, Friendship Garden Club and volunteering for the Red Cross and Loaves and Fishes. She is survived by her son, Winfred "Joe" Joseph Garst Jr. and his wife, Pat; two daughters, Elaine G. Powers and Lynn G. Duke and her husband, Barry; two sisters, Mary Louise Stoutamire and Virginia Barrett and her husband, Paul; grandchildren and spouses, Carey and Bill Wyatt, Amy and Chris Kolar, Katie and Sean Conaway, Laura P. Duke, Caroline E. Duke, and Allison C. Duke, Anna, Tucker, Jane, Emmy, and Mary Kate Wyatt and Matthew and Abigail Kolar and Campbell and Eliza Conaway; special nephew, Frank Sellers and wife, Kaye; and a number of nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 9, 2009, at College Lutheran Church, Salem, with Pastor Wynemah Hinlicky officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Interment will be held for the family after the reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Frances' name to College Lutheran Church, the American Red Cross or the American Lung Association of Virginia. John M. Oakey and Son, Salem, is in charge of the arrangements.
