Eleanor Howell Obituary

Eleanor Mott July 6, 1917 ~ March 4, 2009
Eleanor Mott (Aunt Ellie) Howell, 91, of Roanoke, Va., Houston, Texas, and Southampton, N.Y., a devoted wife and fun loving aunt and stepmother passed away peacefully at her home in Roanoke on March 4, 2009.
With a keen sense of humor, quick wit and a zest to live life to the fullest, Aunt Ellie touched many and she will be deeply missed by all of her family and friends.
Eleanor is a graduate of San Jacinto High School in Houston and the San Francisco School of Art. She was an accomplished artist and seamstress, loved to garden and play croquet. She especially loved a good party and to dance. She caught the travel bug early as a stewardess for Delta airlines during the war. She also worked as a realtor and in marketing for Sears.
Preceded in death by her husbands, Lloyd McGee, T.O. "Cy" Worth and William B. Howell; as well as sisters, Katharine Mott Way and Frances Mott Newkirk; her parents, Harry and Katharine Mott; and her niece, Susan Newkirk Hunter.
She is survived by her doting nieces, Robin Newkirk Muncaster and Kristin Way; her beloved stepdaughters, Courtia Worth and Edwina Hatch; her nephews, David Mott Way and Peter Mott Way; including many great-nieces and nephews and grandchildren; and especially her devoted great-niece and nephew, Mary Etta and David A. Way; and her precious companion and long pet, Tiffany.
The family extends their gratitude and many thanks for her cherished caregivers Tina, Ana, Renny, Margaret, Carolyn and Big Mamma as well as all the wonderful people at Gentle Shepard Hospice, Home Instead Senior Care and Rescare Home Health and the staff of Hidden Valley Country Club for taking such good care of her. We would like to give a special thank you to Doctor Nina Sweeney, her massage therapist Monica Adkins, and her hair dresser, Adam Whetsel for going above and beyond.
Visitation will be held at Oakey's South on Brambleton Saturday, March 7, 2009, from 4 to 6 p.m. followed by a celebration of Ellie's life at the home of Kristin Way. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Ellie's honor to the Roanoke Valley SPCA.

Gran Jelly, as she was known to her step grandchildren, William Worth Hatch and Diana Huntting Hatch of Bridgehampton, NY, made Diana and Bill's life very full for over 20 years. Her step son Toby Worth, who had 6 children, were also blessed with being able to show the Texas girl how to enjoy the ocean and Long Island. Gran Jelly had a wonderful ability to share with all when she moved to Long Island with Cy Worth, who was then her husband. She loved having the grandchildren visit and she cooked many a meal for all of them!
Another joy for her was having her mother Mimi and sister Franny visit in the Hamptons because she did not return to Texas, she happily became a New Yorker. She became an avid croquet player at the Meadow Club and was extremely happy when she won a prize in a ranking tournament; she proudly displayed the trophy in her den for years! Gran Jelly had wonderful years on Long Island before she was moved because of her illness, so her extended 'family tree' could care for her in Virginia.

I am deeply saddened by her loss to those who obviously loved and cherished Eleanor as much as she cherished her family and living life to the fullest. The world is not a better place without her.
