Durward Holder Obituary

Durward Alexander Holder, 84, of Roanoke, died Friday, June 12, 2009, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with his family at his side. He was born January 20, 1925, to Wiley and Lena Holder of Roanoke. In addition to his parents, preceding Durward in death were two older sisters, Nester Robertson and Sallie Wimmer. He retired from General Electric Company in 1983 with 27 years of service. A World War II veteran, Durward served in the U.S. Army 295th Ordnance Company supporting both the 2nd and 9th Armies from 1943 to 1946, during which time he was deployed throughout England and Europe. Durward loved life, and what he loved most in life was his family. Until failing health prohibited it, he enjoyed woodworking, and he passed along to his sons and grandsons an appreciation for fine craftsmanship as well as a commitment to excellence. Durward also enjoyed helping others, he enjoyed children, and he always enjoyed a good joke. He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years, Marlene Jones Holder. Also surviving are two sons, Mark Holder (and Laurel), and Eric Holder, all of Roanoke; two grandsons, Evan Holder (and Brittany) of Hatteras, N.C., and Ethan Holder, of Roanoke; one nephew, Gary Robertson (and Paige), of Hopewell, Va.; and one niece, Patsy Woessner (and Ernie), also of Hopewell. The funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, with a graveside service immediately following at Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, June 14, 2009 from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., then again Monday, June 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. While flowers are welcomed, memorial donations also may be made to the Youth and Children's programs at Rockingham Court United Methodist Church in Roanoke. Oakey's Vinton Chapel is handling arrangements (540)982-2221.

Marlene(Meenie)
I am sorry to read of Durward's passing. May the fond memories, and prayers sustain you at this difficult time. I have fond memories when you and Durward were dating.Nancy and I would hide in the back floor of the car so we could go with you two on a date. He would pretend he didn't know ,then ride us to Vinton ,or around the block and bring us back home. Nancy and I would get the giggles.
May god bless you and the family.
I will try to come see you when I come to Va. I did go see Nancy and Fredna.

Dear Marlene and family,
My heart goes out to you at this sad time. I think of you often and of the wonderful visits to your home many years ago. I still have video's when Keith was a baby and Christy was little and we made home made ice cream outside. The memories always bring a smile. I know your hearts are hurting and words can't help much. I pray God will give you peace and fond memories to sustain you. May God bless you all during this difficult time.
