Margaret Jones Obituary

Margaret Ann Jones known by friends as "Peggy," 82, of Galax, Va., passed away Tuesday night, June 16, 2009, at Twin County Regional Hospital. Miss Jones was born in Galax, Va., on January 14, 1927, to the late Elmer S. and Grace Edwards Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Iva Jones Bourke and Kitty Jones Halsey. She received a bachelor of science degree from Radford University in 1948 and a master of education from Virginia Tech in 1953. She served as teacher of Business Education, Galax, High School for 40 years and retired in 1989. She was active in the Virginia Business Education Association where she served as Recording Secretary and was on the Board of Directors. She was Delta Pi Epsilon, Virginia Tech Chapter and Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Kappa Chapter. She was in the Galax Education Association where she was elected first president when organized in 1955; Galax Business and Professional Women's Club where she served as president and recording secretary on the local level, served as committee chairman on state level, and elected District I Director. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Galax, Va., where she served on numerous committees, a member of the administrative board, and president of the Adult Bible Class for several years. Peggy is survived by her niece and her husband, Kay and Hank Ross, of Perryville, Md.; nephew and his wife, Robert and Maureen Bourke, of Chatham, Mass.; great-nieces, Rebecca Bourke, Sarah Bourke and Jennifer Dupilka; and children to numerous to name, "her students." The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, June 19, 2009, in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Walt Simmerman officiating. Burial will follow in Felts Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, June 18, 2009, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First United Methodist Church or the Galax Foundation for Excellence of Education. Her insistence on excellence and life lessons in addition to the courses she taught greatly influenced my life. She helped me get my first job and every job thereafter made use of the skills she taught. What a privilege it was to see her again at the class of 56's reunion just a couple of years ago.
