Charles Poff Obituary

Charles Stephen (Steve) Poff, of Christiansburg, Va., died of lung cancer on Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born at the New Altamont Hospital in Christiansburg on April 4, 1944. After graduation from Christiansburg High School, his employers included the Montgomery News Messenger, Moores Building Supply and Lowe's. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Ina and Paul Poff; brother, William Poff; and grandparents, Gene and Lillian Kanode Brackens. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Gloria Keister Poff; and his daughter, April Dawn Poff. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Paul (Buddy) and Virginia Poff; nephew and wife, Mark and Kelley Poff, of Ashville, N.C.; niece and husband, Tara and Mike Owens; grandniece, Jordan N. Owens; brother-inlaw and sister-in-law, Mike and Judy Keister; nephew, Ryan M. Keister; niece, Lauren M. Keister; nephew and wife, Brock A. and Michelle Keister; grandnephew, Kyle J. Keister; and grandniece, Mabry E. Keister. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2009, at the Horne Funeral Home followed by a short memorial service at 7 p.m. According to his wishes Steve has been cremated. He has requested those attending the visitation and/or the memorial service to dress casually. Flowers are always appreciated but contributions may be made to the Montgomery Museum and Lewis Miller Regional Art Center, 300 Pepper Street, Christiansburg, Va. 24073 or the Wilderness Road Regional Museum, P.O. Box 373, Newbern, Va. 24126. The Poff family is being served by Horne Funeral Service. Online condolences may be sent to www.hornefuneralservice.com.

Steve, as I knew him, was certainly one of a kind and extremely difficult to replace. He was always talented, energetic and a joy to be around. Growing up in a small town meant that all of us had to be bonded. From grades 1-12, I knew Steve. Rest in peace and know you are missed.
