Charles Aull Obituary

Dr. Charles Edward (Charlie) Aull, died on July 4, 2009. He was 81 years old. Charlie was born on September 1, 1927, in Astoria, New York City, New York, the second child of Wilson Aull and Mary Sullivan. After brief service with the U.S. Navy at the close of World War II, Charlie went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemical Engineering at Columbia University, a Master's Degree at the University of Oregon and a Ph.D. at the University of Colorado in Mathematics. After teaching assignments in several schools, including the University of Wisconsin and Kent State University, Charlie came to the Mathematics Department at Virginia Tech in 1965. He taught Mathematics at Virginia Tech until his retirement in 1992. Charlie published more than 50 papers in his field of Topology and edited two larger works: Handbook of the History of General Topology and Rings of Continuous Functions. But most people knew Charlie through his activities with the NAACP and Virginians Against the Death Penalty, through his regular commitment to visiting those in prison at Fairlawn and at the Juvenile Detention Home in Christiansburg, and through his love for and commitment to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Blacksburg and the Newman Community, the Catholic Campus Ministry at Virginia Tech. Charlie is survived by his brother, Robert Thomas Aull, of Levittown, New York; his sister, Nancy Aull, of Blacksburg, Va.; nieces and nephews, Patricia Enzmann, of Flemington, N.J., Eileen Wisniewski, of Fresno, Calif., Robert T. Aull, of Carmel, N.Y. and Mary Aull, of Basking Ridge, New Jersey; eight great-nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and colleagues. A Vigil Service will take place at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SW, Blacksburg, Va. on Tuesday evening, July 7, 2009 at 6 p.m., with a viewing to follow. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Mary's Parish, 1205 Olde Mill Road, Blacksburg, on Wednesday, July 8 at 11 a.m. Fr. Richard Mooney will preside. Immediately following internment at the Memorial Gardens of the New River Valley on North Main St., there will be a reception at St. Mary's Parish Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Newman Community, 203 Otey Street, Blacksburg, VA 24060, or the St. Mary's Parish Building Fund, 1205 Olde Mill Rd., Blacksburg, VA 24060.

Charlie was a teacher to my husband, Stephen Corwin, and a friend to me and my children. We would see him at McDonalds on Saturdays and he always came to talk and play with the children. My children, all grown up now, still remember him fondly. I am only sorry that my son, now a math major at Tech, will never get to experience Charlie as a teacher.

My condolences to Nancy and other family members and friends of Charlie Aull. Charlie was always an enthusiastic participant and initiator of social ministry activities at St. Mary´s and at Newman Community. The residents of the Juvenile Detention Home were always in his heart. More so than all the wonderful things he did was exceptional person he was--a very dear man. I will miss him greatly. ¨"Cindy Massie"

Nancy,and family:
Charlie was a great and like a family member to me. He reminded me a lot of my grandfather. I'm going to miss the conversations we had on the bus. No matter how bad my days were Charlie always had a smile on his face. and had something cheerful to say. Charlie will be missed, but not forgotten. John Sewell Blacksburg Transit

CHARLIE WAS A DEVOTED FRIEND TO THE CHILDREN OF THE NEW RIVER VALLEY JUVENILE DETENTION HOME. HE ALWAYS CAME WITH A SMILE AND A DEEP CONCERN FOR THE CHILDREN HOUSED THERE. I KNOW THAT I SPEAK FOR THE STAFF AND THE CHILDREN WHEN I SAY HE WILL BE SORELY MISSED. HE REALLY CARED FOR THE LEAST OF MEN, AND I AM SURE THE LORD HAS SAID TO HIM WELCOME HOME THY GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT. GOD BLESS YOU CHARLIE AND YOUR FAMILY. STEVE HALL EX SUPT. OF THE NRVJDH.

To Nancy and the entire Aull family I wish to express my deepest sympathy. I regret that I could not be there in person but I am with you in spirit.
What I will always remember about Charlie is his untiring commitment to public service. The community has suffered a great lost and I have lost a friend. I take comfort in the belief that Charlie is now enjoying the rest that he richly deserves.

Mr. Aull was a regular passenger of the Blacksburg Transit ACCESS service. He was always interesting to talk with and had a wonderful wit. When I visited him recently while he was in ICU he was very appreciative of the card signed by the staff members of BT. He was very well thought of by staff and we will miss him. My thoughts and condolences are with Nancy and Mr. Aull's other family and friends. He was a very likable gentleman, and his contributions to our community are commendable and appreciated. Dear family and friends of Charlie,
It is with deep regret to read of the passing of Charlie. He was a dear and loyal of our 'member 70's Sunday night bridge club'. He really loved being at the bridge table. Wish I could be there to say good-bye.
