Linkous family:
My husband's grandfather was Glen Howell, who was a member of the "Dixie Playboys" as well as another country and western group, and also did several shows at WSLS and on radio with Mel. I remember Glen telling us so many stories before he died about Mel and his accomplishments, and how good of friends they were. You all will be in our prayers.

Mel took pity on a fellow English major and gave me my first real job after college. With his help and support, I eventually became a Producer/Director at WSLS. Mel was a source of blessing in my life and a fine Christian gentleman whom I count it a privilege to have known.

I was a Producer/Director at WSLS in the mid 70's. Mel was my "BOSS". He always help & supported me in my daily dutes. Mel was a true BROADCASTER in every sence of the word. He loved to talk about the "good old days" but had no problem with new broadcast technolpgy. I always made it a point to get in touch with Mel when I got in town. Mel you are missed.

Linkous Family,

I worked with Mel at WSLS in the mid 1980's. He & I were the last Producers/Directors of his weekly show "Route 10". At the end of each production, Mel ALWAYS came by and said "Thank You" & "I Appreciate You". They don't make'em like that anymore. . .

He was a true friend and gentleman. . . and I shall miss him.

Our memories of Mel Linkous go way back to our early days of rather carefree activities at Melrose Baptist Church where our families were active. Mel was such an interesting person, jovial, but intelligent on many levels...always with a smile that cheered and made your day! He and Vi made such a great couple and we extend to her and all of the family our sincere condolences...Mel was the type of person who will linger in our memories.

I am so sorry to hear about Mel. He worked very diligently to make Virginia Veterans Care Center special place. His hours of volunteer time was never forgotten.
Also, having Browder with us at the time made it even more special.

Mel Linkous was a wonderful gentleman. I had the privilege of working for him at WSLS-TV for several years in the mid 70’s. He would regularly say thank you for your work. There was something else he often said in addition to thank you and that was “I appreciate you.”. It was always sincere and it meant a lot. My deepest sympathy to the entire Linkous family.

Mr.Linkous was a good man and I was fortunate to have known him in person. As a kid, I went into WSLS to find out how "Freddy the Forcaster" was done, and that was the begining of a friendship that lasted years. We went to the breakroom and he bought me a coke and we talked. On other visits I was allowed in the newsroom (only a couple feet away) while he did the weather and even got to appear on tv with him from time to time.He was never to busy for me and even after moving to the other side of town, he would at times, come and pick me up.I am sad to hear of his passing but I am grateful for the friendship and memories he gave me.It was my wife who gave me the news, because she had heard all the stories that I told her about this nice man who worked for WSLS and a good friend.
