Hugh Sigmon Obituary

Hugh W. Sigmon, 89, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2009. He was preceded in death by a sister, Eva Aldhizer. Mr. Sigmon graduated from Jefferson High School in 1939 and Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1943. He was a World War II Army veteran serving in both the Pacific and European Theatres. He began his career as an architect with Thompson and Payne and retired with Smithey and Boynton. Mr. Sigmon was a longtime member of Grandin Court Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher, as well as on many committees. He was a longtime volunteer at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, was an avid golfer, and loved being a Paw Paw. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jacqueline; sons, Ken Sigmon and wife, Karyn, of Roanoke, and Kevin Sigmon and wife, Betsy, of Abingdon; grandchildren, Hannah, Nathan, Chris, Lauren and Layne; sister, Helen McLeod, of Roanoke; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Grandin Court Baptist Church Building Fund, 2660 Brambelton Avenue, Roanoke, Va. 24015. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2009, at Oakey's South Chapel with the Rev. Kevin Meadows officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at Oakey's South Chapel, 540-989-3131.

One of the very finest gentleman I have ever had the opportunity to meet, play golf with, and a great neighbor. Papa Sig, you were the best and Ann and I will miss you more than you know. We are so sorry, Mama Sig, for your loss.

Ken & Karyn, I am so sorry for your loss. I went thru the same thing in 2004 when I lost my dad. He was 94. You will never forget all the memories you had of him. Take care & may God get you thru this sad time.
