Marvin Lougheed Obituary

Marvin Norman Lougheed, MD, died peacefully on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, with family at his bedside. He was born on April 18, 1917, in Fairview (formerly Waterhole), Alberta, Canada. He is preceded in death by his parents and four of his brothers. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, V. Carole Lougheed; his children, Melford (Sandra) of Powell River, British Columbia, Ellen, Kendall (Jill Austin), and Donna, MD, all of Ottawa, Ontario, Jill of Montreal, Quebec, and Sean (Kathleen) of Manassas, Va.; and stepchildren, Joyce Thornhill (Joshua Gotbaum), of Washington, D.C., and Hugh Thornhill (Laura), of Roanoke, Va. He is also survived by his former wife, Elsie, of Ottawa, Ontario; brother, Glen of Hillsboro, N.D.; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Marvin received his Doctor of Medicine in 1947 from McGill University, followed by residencies in Radiology and Radiation Oncology at the Montreal General Hospital, the Swedish Tumor Institute, Seattle, and McGill University. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Canada) and the American College of Radiology. He worked for 20 years for the Montreal General, the Children's Memorial, Jewish General and Notre Dame Hospitals. He was also on the teaching staff of McGill University.
In 1971, Marvin moved to Roanoke, Va., where he served as Director of Radiation Oncology at the Cancer Center of Southwest Virginia until his retirement in 1989. In addition to being a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Virginia, he also served as President of the Virginia Chapter, American College of Radiology, and was a member of many other professional organizations in both countries. Throughout the years, he advocated against tobacco abuse through political and organizational activities, especially the American Cancer Society.
Marvin held himself to the highest standard of medical practice and helped thousands of patients with complex cancer treatments. He was instrumental in the conception and design of the Cancer Center and the innovative care it brought to patients. He envisioned his every endeavor to be of lasting benefit to future generations whether it be the design of the Cancer Center, or planting trees and laying bricks.
Marvin was loved for his quick wit, his enthusiasm for intellectual discourse, and his energetic pursuit of knowledge and understanding. He was loving and generous with his family and many philanthropic organizations. He traveled extensively for both professional education and personal enrichment. He worshiped for 38 years at St. John's Episcopal Church in Roanoke, and served on its Vestry. He was especially interested in the Outreach Financial Support program, and the many people in Roanoke helped by it.
The Lougheed family would like to extend their sincere thanks to his personal physicians, and the staff of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and The Court at Roanoke for their professional and compassionate care. We are grateful to St. John's Clergy, Lay Eucharistic Ministry and the Pastoral Care Committee for their attention to his spiritual well-being. We will always remember his special friend, Janet Lucille Martin, whose companionship meant so much to him during his stay at The Court.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. John's Episcopal Church, Outreach, P.O. Box 257, Roanoke, Va. 24002; the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Road, Suite 106A, Roanoke, Va. 24018; or the Carilion Foundation, Education Fund, Attn. Cathy Sargent, 2013 S. A reception for family and friends will follow immediately.

Dear Carole,

Ashleigh and I both seem to have the same type of memories concerning Marvin. We loved him for his gentle kind soul regarding mankind. I loved and appreciated him when I was so troubled over my brothers cancerous brain tumor. Marvin was there to always support me through those rough days. I loved our conversations when he would teach me medical terms that I love to "drop" when given the opportunity. Truth is Carole, I have never known two more wonderful human beings. I miss my friend Marvin and I'm so sorry that I'm not there with my other friend.
Love to you,
Kathey Seymour (and Bob)

Dear Mrs. Lougheed,

I read this and think what an incredible, learned man. Yet my fondest memories of him are those when he would take the time just to talk to me and we would laugh about silly things that you and my mom would be up too. I think it very special that a man such as he, would take the time to spend it with a child. I wish that I could be there for the service. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
