Homer Simmons Obituary

With his work completed here on Earth, Homer Lewis Simmons Jr., of Bedford County, Va., was called home by the Lord on Saturday, August 1, 2009. Born on April 11, 1945, Homer was 64 years old and was preceded in death by his father, Homer Lewis Simmons Sr. He was a charter member of Chamblissburg Baptist Church and retired from Norfolk Southern's East End Shops after 39 years of service. He was also employed part-time at Stop-In Food Store #146, where he took pride in his job and met and made many friends. The blessed members of his surviving family include his loving mother, Flora W. Simmons; wife of 45 years, Doris Chaney Simmons; children, Sherre Simmons Oakes, and Scott Anthony Simmons and wife, Melanie; three beloved grandsons, Justin Drew Oakes, Isaac Bailey Simmons, and Owen David Simmons; sister, Phyllis Simmons Carter; nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and loved ones. Homer's kind and gracious nature touched the lives of his church family, co-workers, neighbors, family, and friends. A servant of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Homer's life was a testimony of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-discipline. The family would like to thank our church family and the many friends in the community who have given their love and support over the past two years. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2009, at Chamblissburg Baptist Church with Dr. Ken Scoggins officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2009, at Chamblissburg Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Chamblissburg Baptist Church Special Projects Fund. Arrangements by Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 540-982-2221.

Dear Doris and Family,
I am sad to hear of Homer's passing but celebrate the fact that he is with the Lord. His example of a husband, a father, and a Godly man, is only to be desired by us all. I will never forget the positive impact that he had on my life during my teen years. He truly lived his life as an example of Christ's Love and I am a better person today to have known him.

Doris & Family-I learned yesterday that Homer had passed away on Saturday--I kept thinking about you all evening and what a special sweet couple both of you were at Stewartsville School as childhood sweethearts. I also remember Homer's sweet smile at Norfolk Southern and in the community--Years ago he scrapped my driveway and when I gave him a check to pay him he tore it up--He said you don't charge a neighbor--I know your loss is tremendous and may God surround all of you with his comfort until you are reunited with your Christian husband, father and son again-Love-Rachel Dillon-Reedy
