“Jesus said unto her [Martha], ‘I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.”—John 11:25.
How saddened I was to read about the death of Stella Barbee Glendy. In 1943, when I was only eight years old, Mrs. Barbee began teaching me Braille. When I enrolled at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton the next year, I was moved up to the second grade after six weeks. Without Mrs. Barbee’s instruction, I would have been required to remain in the first grade for the entire year. Indeed, she started me on a path that led to a Ph.D. and a 39-year teaching career that I dearly loved. You never forget the people who made these kinds of important contributions to your development.
What a joy it was some years ago to see her again at a reception sponsored by Voice of the Blue Ridge, a Roanoke charity that helps blind people with access to printed material.
I didn’t know that Barbara and Beverly—both of whom were younger than I had passed away. They would have known about their mother’s contribution to my education and to other blind children in the Roanoke Valley.
Take comfort in your sorrow, knowing that this woman of faith has been reunited with her children, both of her husbands, and with her Lord, Jesus Christ.
