Marie McCall Obituary

Marie S. McCall, 92, of Cedar Bluff, Va., went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 3, 2009. She was born in Stotesbury, West Virginia in 1917, to Archie K. and Eliza Turner Smith. The family moved to Beckley, W.Va. where she graduated from Woodrow Wilson High and was a graduate of National Business College, Roanoke, Va. She married Walter Bernard McCall and has lived in Cedar Bluff, Va. for the past 60 years. Marie was a charter member of Gethsemane Baptist Church where she served faithfully as Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and on the Building and Grounds Committee. Board member for the Virginia Baptist Children's Home, a member of the Richlands Woman's Club, the Red Hat club, and numerous committees for the Tazewell County Country Club. She was a member of the Cedar Bluff Garden Club where her love for flowers was so evident by the beautiful landscaping and flowers she grew in her yard. To many friends and neighbors, she has shared a slip of a plant or flower. Though tiny in stature, she was accomplished in many areas of life. She was a perfectionist by nature and for every task she performed, she did it to perfection, whether it was cooking, sewing, baking, gardening or giving of her talents to the church or to friends and neighbors or to the food pantry. In later years she became a member of the DAR and became Regent in the Fort Maiden Springs Chapter at age 80. She met and made many friends through the DAR and she cherished each and every one of the friendships she has made. Marie was predeceased by her husband, Walter Bernard McCall and a son, James Smith McCall; Mary Jo Gray, sister; and brothers, Ray and Azel Smith. Survived by son, W.B. "Buddy" McCall Jr. and wife, Elaine, of Clinton, Tenn.; daughter, Rebecca McCall Hammons and husband, Roger, of Tomball, Texas; and granddaughter, Holly Elizabeth Layne and husband, Chris, of Houston, Texas; Kathleen Smith, sister; Calvin Smith, of Dayton, Ohio, brother; and Dillard T.
