Frank Klein Obituary

Frank Klein, 95, of Salem, Va., passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2009, after a valiant struggle with cancer. Frank served as Captain in the United States Marine Air Corps during World War II. His numerous assignments included Midway, Okinawa, Guam and China. He also served at Guadalcanal as Commanding Officer of his squadron, assisting in repelling an almost overwhelming enemy force into a resounding victory, thus securing the island of Guadalcanal. Born into poverty to immigrant parents, Frank overcame huge obstacles and succeeded in his careers with the Federal Department of Agriculture and The New York City Transit Authority. He was an active member of the Floral Park United Methodist Church in New York, and later the Bonsack United Methodist Church of Roanoke, until illness limited his ability. Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers; a sister; and his oldest son, Frank Kendrick Klein. He leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Inez Finch Klein; daughter, the Rev. Candice L. Klein; son, Kevin C. Klein; daughter-in-law, Kathleen B. Klein; granddaughter, Megan A. Klein; and numerous nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces. He was surrounded by friends and neighbors during this difficult time, and especially by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lancaster and Mrs. Audrey Arthur. The family is very grateful for the staff and care they received from Blue Ridge Cancer Care, Amedisys Hospice Services and Nurse One. Their professionalism and dedication is second to none. The family will receive friends on Monday, August 17, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. Services will be held on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home's chapel with interment immediately following at Cedar Lawn Cemetery. The Rev. Ronnie Morris and the Rev. Kendall Johnson will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Running Strong for American Indian Youth at 213 N. Second Street in Raton, N.M. 87740 or to the charity of your choice. Online condolences to the family may be made at johnmoakey.com. The Klein family is being served by John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, 540-389-5441.

Mrs. Klein and family,
I am so sorry to hear that Mr. Klein passed away. I will certainly miss his visits to the bank, where he would always speak to each one of us, always by name. He was such an intelligent and sharp man right up until his last visit to the bank. He would always say to me "check my math" and he was always right. I will certainly miss him as he was one of my favorite customers. Many prayers will be with your family.

Inez and family, I cannot begin to tell you how sorry I am for Frank's passing. I know that he is now at peace in our Fathers home waiting for all of us to join him. I have missed him and you at church but thought about you often. I know that it is hard letting go of this precious soul but 64 years together shows what happy memories you must have. Sincerely Bill and Bonnie Moore
