Albert Scariot Obituary

Albert Scariot, 93, of Salem, Va., passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2009. He was born on February 24, 1916, and lived in Sophia, W.Va., until 1996 when he moved to Salem. He was a veteran having served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1944. Preceding him in death were his parents, Giacomo (Jim) and Margarita Scariot; brothers, Geno Scariot and Victor Scariot; and sisters, Anna Scariot Martina and Maria Scariot Serigio. His surviving family includes his caregivers, Gina Scariot (niece), Guy Brooks, and Lyndsay Green. Albert was with us for 16 years and he attended the Adult Day Care Center for six years during this time. Thank you to the staff for their support and services. A special thank you goes to the following staff at the Salem VA Hospital, Chris Lentz, P.A., who took care of Albert for many years; and the staff in Bldg. 2, second floor, who provided respite care on numerous occasions and who were always there to go the extra mile with him. Appreciation also goes to the many others at the VA Hospital who crossed paths with us in any way. It truly takes a village to be a caregiver and we were blessed with many wonderful people along the way. A special thank you, also, to Sarah L., his wonderful caretaker from Home Instead, who was always there when we needed her. Other survivors include a niece, Margie Scariot, of Charlotte, N.C.; nephew, Michael Scariot and his wife, Debra, and their children, Joshua and Israel, in Garner, N.C. As Albert requested, there will be no funeral services. He will be privately interred at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Beckley, W.Va., 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2009. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Adult Care Center of Roanoke Valley, 2321 Roanoke Blvd., Salem, Va. 24153. Online condolences to the family may be made at johnmoakey.com. The Scariot family is being served by John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, Va., 540-389-5441.

Please accept our condolences on the death of your uncle. It was nice to have met you and Mr. Scariot at the VA, Ward 2-2. He and my husband shared rooms for a bit in August. May God bless your family.
