Darlene Haskins Obituary

Darlene Terry Haskins, 73, of Salem, Va., went to be with the Lord Monday, September 14, 2009, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Darlene was born on November 14, 1935, in Salem, Va., to the late George and Myrtle Terry. She was preceded in death by her son, Alan Wilson; sister, Ramona Terry Mabery; and brothers, Henry M. Terry, Bobby L. Terry and Manual S. (Penny) Terry. Surviving family include her beloved husband, companion and friend of 30 years, Harry T. Haskins Jr.; son, Ken E. Wilson; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Brenda Wilson; stepdaughter, Melanie Leweke and husband, Scott, stepdaughter, Kathy Glasgow and husband, Kevin; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many devoted friends and neighbors. Darlene was a long-standing devout member of the Salem Church of Christ. A charter member of the American Business Women's Association, Darlene worked in retail most of her life and was employed for many years by People's Drug and Lowe's Home Improvement store. She was also a great supporter of the Salem Police Department, where her husband, Harry, was chief for 20 years. Darlene was a small lady with a big, kind heart and a wonderful zest for life. Those who were blessed to know her will remember her vivacious personality and love of beauty. She fought her illness bravely without complaint and was an inspiration to everyone; she will be deeply missed. The family would like to express their appreciation to Debbie Brown, Lisa Gusler and Tanya Terry, of Rescare, Betty Scott, Good Samaritan Hospice, and many compassionate church friends and neighbors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Darlene's name to the Salem Church of Christ, the Salem Police Department for Camp DARE or Good Samaritan Hospice. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 20, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, September 21, 2009, at Lotz Salem Chapel with Mike Flinchum officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park.

Chief Haskins,
I am so sorry to hear of Darlene's passing. She was a wonderful, charming and beautiful woman. I remember Darlene from long ago when she worked at Peoples Drug in Salem and at Lowes. She will be greatly missed. This is from one of 'Harry's Angels', a former crossing guard.
