Fleming Vickers Obituary

The Stars and Stripes, they flew forever always in his heart. He was loyal to his nation and bravely did his part.
Always thinking of his brother ever in his mind,
He stood for love of country and most of all, mankind.
Now gazing down with his Master through a light and heavenly cloud,
He's still looking out for all of us of whom he is so proud.
Fleming Lynn (Vic) Vickers, 82, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 14, 2009. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Irene Vickers; his parents, Pearl and William Vickers; two brothers, Billy and Fred; and one sister, Marie Hash.
He was a veteran who served in the Merchant Marines as well as the Marine Corps. At 33, he continued his life of service in joining the Roanoke City Sheriff's Department on February 1, 1961. With dedication he was employed there for 32 ½ years, never missing one day of work until his retirement in 1993.
Vic leaves to cherish his memory, his caring son, Barry, daughter-in-law, Bobbie, and two loving granddaughters, Kerri Vickers and Jessica Fereber and children. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Claude Harrison and wife, Bobbi; four sisters-in-law, Christine Sexton and husband, Raymond, Rebecca Kingery and Leona Harrison, all of Roanoke, and Polly Vickers, of Richmond. Vic also leaves many loving nieces, nephews, loved ones and friends.
The family extends their gratitude and thanks to the doctors and staff of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for their outstanding care and attention that was provided, as well as a very special thank you to the Roanoke City Fire and EMS Departments.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2009, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with Pastor Paul Sink officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 16, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 540-982-2100.
