Joseph Anderson Obituary

Joseph Verily Anderson (Coach Superman) peacefully went to meet his Lord on Wednesday, September 16, 2009. He was born on August 28, 1948, in Roanoke, Va., to the late Andrew Sr. and Mary Ann Coste Anderson. He had a long struggle with chronic illnesses but never let down his family as being a loving devoted husband to Romaine Baxter Anderson; and best father ever to Clifton (Angela) Anderson, Elizabeth Marie Anderson and Angelo Mikkel Fuller. He retired from Roanoke Electric Steel but was last employed by the Virginia Veterans Care Center where he served as a security guard. His great pleasure was coaching our inner city youth through an organization he founded called The Inner City Athletics Association. This he did for many years before becoming unable to carry out this avocation. Also mourning his loss are his brothers and sisters, Andrew (Constance) Anderson Jr., of Roanoke, Va., Richard Benjamin Anderson, of Pablo, Colo., Antonia Marie Anderson, of Northern Virginia, Katherine Dowe Anderson, of Roanoke, Va., and Rebecca Ann (Tony) Anderson Roussel. His grandchildren will miss his hearty laugh and incredible patience, Deionte' Rashaad Anderson, Sean Nathaniel Fleming, Ebony Robinson, De'Andre Robinson, De'Angelo Robinson, Kierra Robinson, Kwymique Tylil Anderson, Joseph LaSalle Anderson and Joshua Lakkel Anderson; and devoted friends, Limuel Thomas Jr. and William Pannell. Joseph also has three sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; three great-grandchildren; and two god daughters that will mourn his loss; along with a host of nieces and nephews; and all associates and friends from the Virginia Veterans Care Center. Our family wishes to thank the staff of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Dr. Ezekiel Jones, and Dr. Stephen L. Hill for the many times you have assisted with the care of our precious loved one. You treated us as family and for that we are thankful. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2009, in the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel with Pastor Floyd and Co-Pastor Lajuana Davis officiating. The interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 18, 2009, at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to www.Hamlar-Curtis.com.

To the family of Mr. Joseph"Superman" Anderson, "May the work he's done, speaks for him." Truly, Superman was a an inspirational person to the people in the Roanoke Valley, especially the youth. His demeanor was exceptional on and off the playing field and all the parents and players treated him with the utmost respect. Thank you to his family for being patient when he spent lots of evenings with the youth, teaching them the fundamentals of the game, using patience and developing skills and not attitudes. Our prayers are with you always,

Joyce Brewer Jones, and Joan Alfreda Lovelace Dungee, Class of 1967, L.A.H.S

I have many Fond Memories of " Superman" Playing Basketball with him at Wasena Park in the Late 70's to Early 80's he and others took me under there wings not only to advance my game but most importantly to be a better person in life He also gave me my on court nickname of "Havilcek" which has stuck to me till this day If there was more "Superman" in the world the World would be a far better place.

To the Family:

I'm grateful that I had the opportunity to coach with Superman and for being such a great mentor and role model to so many young kids, including my own, in the Inner City Athletic Association Program. Your tireless dedication and devotion was unheralded. May the Lord Bless and Keep your Family Always.
