Helen Newman Obituary

Helen Austin Newman, 92, of Williamsburg, Va., died Tuesday, September 15, 2009. She is survived by her twin sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Preston, (Ruth), of Bristol, Tenn.;; her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Austin Newman (Patricia), of Williamsburg, Va.; three grandsons, Randolph Newman, of Buffalo, N.Y., Peter Newman, of Charleston, S.C., and Mr. and Mrs. Austin Hooker Newman (Holly), of Richmond, Va.; daughter-in-law, Mrs. David Lehman (Linda), of Syracuse, N.Y.; and sister-in-law, Mrs. Harry Austin (Ginny Leigh), of Charlottesville, Va. Helen is also survived by five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her husband, Dr. John Wesley Newman, retired United Methodist minister, predeceased her, as well as son, John Wesley Newman, III, and her two brothers, Hayden L. Austin, Jr. and Dr. Harry Austin. Helen graduated from Madison College, now JMU, and obtained her Masters Degree in Education from the College of William and Mary. She retired from the VA Public School System and was active in many civic organizations. During her long life, she enjoyed playing bridge and participation in supper clubs, garden club, needlework and reading. A graveside service will be held at West End Cemetery in Wytheville, Va. on September 22, 2009 at 11 a.m. Arrangements are being handled by Nelsen Funeral Home in Williamsburg, Va. and Barnett's Funeral Home in Wytheville, Va.
