Jack Greer Obituary

Jack Tazewell Greer, 57, of Salem, Va., passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2009. He was born on October 25, 1951 in Roanoke, Va. and was the son of the late Charles William and Sophie Kempest Greer. He was employed by G.J. Hopkins as a licensed plumber. He was the lead guitar player and he named the band. He has a special talent for music and could play the mandolin, banjo, and piano. Jack had an easy spirit about him and was a gentle man. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Phillip "Jimmy" Greer and two sisters, Doris Powell and Alice Hoal. He is survived by his wife, Joyce "Missy" Greer; two brothers, Gene "Peanut" Greer and wife, Jeri, and Gerald Greer and wife, Robin; two sisters, Janice Sheppard and husband, Rick and Charlotte McDaniel; dear friend and son he never had, David Maxey; a four year old Schipperkee dog named Kalie Mae; a 20 year old cat named Mrs. Kitty; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Friday, September 25, 2009, in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, with the Reverend Brian Gordon officiating. The family will receive friends after the service. The Greer family is being served by John M. Oakey & Son, Salem. (540) 389-5441.

I knew Jackie and his brothers as we grew up in Salem. He, Murphy Wood and I were learning to play guitar together. We showed him how to play bar chords on the guitar. Very sad to see he and Jimmy passed. My condolences to his wife Missy who I also grew up with.

Missy and all,
So sorry to hear about Jack's death. I don't live in Salem anymore and now live in KY, but keep up with the papers and still visit family there. He was a great guy and I know you will miss him alot. I use to see Gerald, Peanut and Charlotte some of the time when I lived there. Please take care of yourselves. Write me sometime at my email [email protected].

Missy,

It was a true pleasure to have played with Jack until his sickness. He was an awesome talent and a very easy going personality. As it was known to everyone in the band, Jack didn't say much, but when he did you had better pay attention.

gonna miss him.
