Ruby Fielder Gibbs

Ruby Fielder Gibbs, 91, of Bedford, Va., passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2009, at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born on Wednesday, September 18, 1918, in Franklin County, a daughter of the late Russell L. Fielder and the late Euba Thurman. She was also preceded in death by a brother, James Fielder; and a sister, Margie Atkinson. She worked the Lunch Counter at Johnson's Department Store and was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church. Surviving are her two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean G. and Donald Owen, of Bedford, and Peggy G. and Johnny DeLong, of Bedford; two brothers, Melvin Fielder and his wife, Australia, and Thomas Fielder, both of Bedford; two grandsons and their wives, Terry and Barbara Owen and John and Christie DeLong, all of Bedford; granddaughter and her husband, Tohnya and Mike Davis, of Bedford; five great-grandchildren, Mason Owen, Ashley DeLong, John DeLong III, Parker DeLong, and Abbigail DeLong; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved pet, Angel. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2009, at Updike Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Murphy and the Rev. Vernon DeLong officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2009, at the funeral home.
