Carson Hicks Obituary

With a joyful song in his heart, Carson Spencer Hicks, 85, of Princeton, W.Va., went to be with his Lord during the pre-dawn hours of Thursday, October 8, 2009. He was born in Covington, Va., on August 18, 1924, and was the son of the late Harry Winstard and Annie Laurie Spencer Hicks. He was also preceded in death on March 21, 2009, by his wife whom he adored for 63 years, Stella Bernece Peck Hicks; three brothers, Herman Hamilton, John Walker and Harry Winstard Hicks; and one sister, Jane Hicks Dedrick. Carson was a graduate of the Covington High School, Class of 1941. He lettered in football, was a gifted tenor in the school chorus and was selected to attend the Westminster Choir School, in the state of New York. Thereafter, he continuously utilized his musical talent to serve his Lord.
He was a member of the United States Marine Corps from April 22, 1943 until his honorable discharge as Staff Sergeant on January 13, 1947. During World War II he served in the Pacific Theatre as a member of the Marine Air Group 22.
After the untimely death of his father, he began employment at the early age of 14 working at Steger Drug Store, Covington, Va., to assist his family. This experience led to a successful career at Spangler Drug Company, Princeton, W.Va., where Carson, also known as "Kit," fulfilled a variety of responsibilities such as assisting in the management of the pharmacy, wedding gift shop, photography department and an old-fashioned soda fountain. The skills he developed through the years in photography led to a career opportunity in 1969 with the Mercer County Board of Education as the supervisor of the audio-visual and text book department. Carson retired in 1983 having successfully located and frequented, during his weekly travel schedule, every palatable school cafeteria in Mercer County!
Mr. Hicks was a long-time member of First Baptist Church, Princeton, W.Va., where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He served on various committees and was an integral part of the church jail ministry. He was a faithful sanctuary choir member and soloist, where he enjoyed singing alongside his son for many years. During the 1970's he took great pleasure in traveling with The Sounds of Conviction Christian musical youth group, where he operated and transported the sound board and lighting equipment for each production. Later in life, he traveled throughout a number of states with Sid Wheeler's Christian ministry and assisted with the sound system for his concerts. All those he met were greatly impacted by his sweet spirit and loving nature.
During the summer months, Carson and his family spent many memorable days at their Bonnie Banks cabin on Peak Creek at Claytor Lake, Va. He enjoyed the time spent with his family and friends participating in activities such as fishing, boating, skiing, entertaining and the ever-popular ongoing cabin maintenance.
Hobbies were an important part of Carson's life. He delighted in church league softball, league bowling and pitching horseshoes. He also enjoyed working together with his wife on various craft projects. The annual celebration of Christ's birth was a special time. For many years, elaborate award-winning handmade Christmas decorations adorned the inside and outside of their residence at 1101 Harrison Street. Carson was known as "Angel Man" and "Daddy Angel" as a result of his many ceramic angel creations, which he used as an instrument in his ministry.
Survivors include his two beloved children he referred to as his "pride" and "joy," Kathy Gray Hicks Lester, a reading specialist in Campbell County, Va., Schools and her husband, Melvin, of Bedford, Va., and Mark Stephen Hicks, a criminal defense attorney in the NRV and his wife, Margaret, of Pearisburg, Va.; his dearly loved stepgranddaughter, Anna Carroll Stevens, of Lynchburg, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are special friends, Anna Gray Branyon and her daughters, Beth Branyon and Dr. Ann Sowers, Sid and Sue Wheeler, and Russ and Angie Willoughby; special caregiver, Flo Wimmer; and numerous friends/caregivers at The Havens and Glenwood Memorial Park Retirement Village. Last, but certainly not least, the family would like to express special thanks to the amazing cardiologist, Dr. Michael A. Blazing, of Duke University Medical Center, whose guidance and loving care, along with others, helped Carson enjoy 23 years of active life after heart bypass surgery.

Visitation will be held on Saturday evening, October 10, 2009, at Seaver Funeral Home, Princeton, W.Va., where the family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. A Celebration of Carson's Life will be conducted 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, 2009, from the First Baptist Church, Princeton, W.Va. Burial will follow in Peterstown Cemetery, Peterstown, W.Va.

Kathy and Mark,
Uncle Kit taught me how to swim. I have many memories of him but that one sticks out the most. He was always so kind and patient. My grandmother Martha Jane was his sister. My thoughts and prayers.

Mark and family,
I was so sad to read of your Dad's passing. I remember all those Sounds trips and the wonderful person who always had a smile on his face as well as a kind word for anyone in his path. What an impression he made on my life as well as many others. As I read other entries I was so happy to hear that his legacy sill lives on in his extended family. I am happy to know he is smiling with our God and with his beloved again. God bless you and your family.

Dear Mark and Kathy, you may not remember me, but I was your Dad and Mom's pastor from 1977-1979. Martha and I were there in Princeton for those few years, but we still have warm memories of Carson and Bernice. I am sorry to hear that your Mom went to be with the Lord earlier this year, and now your Dad, Carson, has joined her. But we will carry the best of memories. We still have the nativity scene Carson made for us. We remember the good times as Claytor Lake. We had good times together in the Lord those many years ago. God Bless!

Kathy & Mark,
Your Dad and Mom were such dear friends of our family. Kit was my husband Jim's joyful fellow laborer in shepherding the multitude of teenagers who sang with the SOUNDS of CONVICTION. Always cheerful, always faithful, always positive and always a song in his heart... Now Kit is with Jesus, rejoicing, blessing and being blessed. How privileged we were to have known him, worked with him and loved him. May it comfort your hearts to know how many loved and appreciated him.

Mark and Kathy, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I was privileged to have the opportunity to work with your father at a very young age, while working at the Board of Education. He was my first "real boss", and a wonderful mentor. Your family will be in my prayers.

Dear Mark and Family,
So sorry to hear of the loss of your father. I will always have fond memories of your parents during our days in Sounds. How ironic that my daughter Cassie took care of him at Glenwood. Now she also has those precious memories of him.
Sincerely, Bonnie Owens Wiley

Kathy, Mark and all those who loved Carson Hicks: His life was a conduit of the love of Jesus to all who were blessed to know this man and be loved by him. So many people from "the Sounds" days came to know God in deeper ways because of him. I will always remember his endearing hugs and words of encouragement as a new believer. We look forward to our ultimate reunion in heaven.

I would like to express my love and sympathy to the family of Mr. Carson Hicks. My prayers and thoughts are with you all. I was a member of 'The Sounds of Conviction'. That is how I met Mr. Hicks. Such a warm and loving individual who took the time to make an insecure goofy teenager feel safe and cared about. God bless you Sir! Andre Wilborn

My heart is saddened with the world's loss of Mr. Hicks, yet my heart sings with joy knowing he is in the arms of our Lord who he served with devotion. Though I had not seen Mr. Hicks for many years since leaving Princeton, I have many fond memories of him. As a member of The Sounds of Conviction, I spent many hours and days with Mr. Hicks learning how to operate the somewhat cantankerous lighting and sound board. His boundless enthusiasm and zest for life often put many of us teenagers to shame. My prayers are with the family members. I look forward to our reunion in Heaven.

We were so sorry to hear of the passing of your father. We got to know him quite a few years ago when he would come to our ceramic shop to purchase his angels and molds of them. He was such a joy to talk with and he always loved to talk for a while before leaving. Please know that our prayers will be with your family at this time.

Kathy, Mark and family. Once again please accept my sincere condolences from me personally, and on behalf of my family. The Hicks family was an integral part of my family history and my childhood memories, as our parents spent many, many funfilled days together. Mom and Dad, and Kit and Bernice were as close as brothers and sisters for many years. There were very few, if any, special occasions or holidays that they were not all together or at least visiting. I'm sure they are now all celebrating a joyous reunion!

Please know that you and your families remain in my thoughts and prayers.
