Francis Key Obituary

Mr. Francis Scott (Scotty) Key, 77, of 2051 Walker Ave., Burlington, N.C. died Sunday, October 11, 2009 at The Village of Brookwood. Mr. Key is a native of Roanoke, Va. and the husband of Frances Showalter Key, who survives. He was the son of the late Rev. Carson Miller Key and the late Connie Dodd Key. Mr. Key was a veteran of the US Air Force, serving during the Korean War. He was a retired Supervisor with General Electric in Salem, Va. and Mebane, N.C. Mr. Key was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church in Burlington. He was also a member of the US Coast Guard Auxillary, Flotilla 09-09. He was a past member of Bula Masonic Lodge #409, A.F. & A.M., and a member of Roanoke Masonic Lodge and the Roanoke Shrine Club. He was an avid athlete, who enjoyed bowling, softball, golf and tennis. He also loved to dance. In addition to his wife, Frances, of the home, Mr. Key is survived by his two daughters, Kelly Key Gaines and her husband, Greg, of Greensboro, Tonya Key Solomon and her husband, Tracy, of Knightdale; his granddaughter, Hannah Solomon; and his nephew, the Rev. Barry Dean Sink, of Martinsville, Va. Mr. Key was preceded in death by his two sisters, Dorothea Key Hedge and Lillian Key Sink. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Front Street United Methodist Church in Burlington. Officiating will be the Rev. Marshall Old and the Rev. William G. Sharpe. The family will receive friends at Rich and Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington, Monday evening, from 6 until 8 p.m. Other times they will be at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the NC Tennis Foundation, 2709 Henry Street, Greensboro, NC 27405 for Junior Development or to Burlington Woman's Club, PO Box 937, Burlington, NC 27216 for various community service projects. The family wishes to express their thanks for the outpouring of love and support during Mr. Key's illness. The online guest book may be signed at www.richandthompson.com.

To the Key Family, I grew up in Hollins Road Church of the Brethren when Rev. Key was pastor there. I was very young at the time but remember Scotty, Dorothy and Lillian. My heart goes out to you. May God bless you.
