Richard Franklin Watson Jr.

Richard Watson Obituary

Richard Franklin Watson Jr., 61, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2009. Known by friends and family as "Dickie," he will always be remembered as the most loving husband, father and friend, as he touched the lives of all who knew him with his larger than life humor and spirit. He was well known for his kind heart, selflessness, and generosity, as evidenced by his dedication to his family and to charities, such as Habitat for Humanity. Those of us who had the pleasure of knowing him will always be inspired by his honor and courage, and that will be his legacy. A graduate of North Cross School in Roanoke, Va., the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., and the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, he was an avid Gamecock and an active member of the USC Alumni Association. For the past 29 years he was an owner of Commonwealth Door and Hardware. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Franklin and Doris Milton Watson. Surviving are his wife, Carol Rust Watson; a daughter and son-in-law, Whitney Watson and Daniel Nicholas, of Arlington, Va.; a son, Hunter Blake Watson, of Nashville, Tenn.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Sherry and Eddie Milligan, of Shreveport, La., and their families. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. on Friday, October 16, 2009, at Oakey's downtown chapel and then following graveside at Evergreen Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the National MS SocietyBlue Ridge Chapter, 1 Morton Drive, Suite 106, Charlottesville, Va. 22903. Donations in Richard F. Watson's name will be earmarked for research into ways to prevent, better treat, and cure Multiple Sclerosis.

I am glad that I did have the honor of knowing Dickie. I am sorry that I didn’t see more of the two of you and your family. It seems that it was just yesterday that you came to my wedding and that was 18 years ago. Where does the time go? Every time I get a e-mail from Pi Kappa Alpha or USC I think of all the good times I had and the friends I made. I remember all the good times we had and how Dickie let me barrow his Vet to go Student teach. I think I could write a book on the many good things that Dickie did not only for me but for anyone he knew. Please extend to your children my deepest sympathy for your loss
.

Dear Carol,

Although you and I didn't meet, I was one of Dickie's neighborhood gang growing up on Poplar Lane. After living away from VA for many years, I got to know him again doing construction in Floyd and when Whitney and my daughter Cara were at North Cross and looked forward to our talks at the girls' soccer games. Dickie was always larger than life, life in the fast lane, full tilt boogie and will be sorely missed by me and all who knew him. May God bless your family.

Carol and family - I was so sad to hear of Dick's passing. Over the past 28 years, I have grown to admire and respect him a great deal, and as I have watched his struggles the last couple of years - I have also come to admire his courage and determination. Ever since the beginning, when it was just Dick, Richard, Clarice and I - we have grown as a family - so I now feel like one of my own family is gone. I have grown to feel as though Dick, Richard & Johnny were "Big Brothers" to me - sometimes even when I didn't want "Big Brothers". We will all miss him every day - and please be assured that you and your family will always be a part of the CDH family and will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Carol...I have been thinking a lot about Dickie & you since getting the sad news yesterday.

While I haven't stayed in contact over the past 10 years we've been out West, I would keep up with you all when I would see John "Mud" Light.

I have to say Dickie was a bit of a hero to me growing up at North Cross. He was very popular student and a gifted athlete - he would regularly whip up on me at football practice, but it toughened me up. The younger NC girls loved him and was he the coolest guy when he drove his 'Vet around S. Roanoke. He made a lot of us laugh out loud.

When I returned to Rke after college, Dickie invited me into his crew of buddies (Trinkle, Barker, Minor, Jennings, Garrett, Lancaster, Butcher, Jamison, Taylor, etc.). You might remember we actually formed a REC league basketball team, which Dickie aptly name "The Can-Hardlies" because we could hardly play a lick. However, we did win some games that one season and surprised a few folks.

I spoke with my parents (Bill & LaVoe) yesterday and they send their love and respects.

Please know Dickie will be missed a lot and by many.

God bless you, Whitney and all your family.
