Carol Sue Hitchcock Drewry

Carol Drewry Obituary

Carol Sue Hitchcock Drewry, 66, of Roanoke, Va., left this world suddenly on Tuesday, October 20, 2009. Carol was born on May 14, 1943, in Oak Hill, W.Va., to Bertha Mae and Hubert Cecil Hitchcock, who predeceased her. She was also predeceased by her brother, whom she fondly called Freddie. Carol was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who raised three children while working as a secretary at American Bridge; Norfolk & Western; Hayes, Seay, Mattern, and Mattern; and for Charlie Phillips. She wanted all of her children to receive a college education and made it a priority. After her children finished college and she retired, Carol dedicated many hours to volunteering at the Presbyterian Community Center. She also cooked, read, knitted, sewed, and did needlework in her spare time. Once her husband, George, retired from AEP, they enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and cruising. Carol was always planning the next trip in her mind.
Carol's primary avocation was working in her church, First Presbyterian Church, Roanoke, Va. Carol served as an Elder and was Clerk of the Session for many years. She worked with the children's ministry as a keyboardist for the children's choir, serving as a table parent for many wonderful children in Logos, making snacks at Vacation Bible School, and doing whatever else needed to be done to care for the children. Additionally, Carol sang in the Chancel Choir and played handbells in the Carilloneurs. When she wasn't at home or traveling with her beloved husband, Carol was at the church volunteering, attending Sunday School or worship services, or doing anything else she was asked.
Carol is survived by her devoted husband of 46 years, George William Drewry Jr., will always love her; and by her three children, their spouses, and their children, David and Brenda Drewry (Evan and Maura), Julie Drewry and Lee Slover, and Ken and Emily Drewry (Samantha and Sara). She is also survived by her sister, Charlotte Ridenhour. Carol also left behind numerous special friends and family members, many of whom fondly called her "Mom" as well.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church, Roanoke, Va., led by the Rev. Robert D. Smith. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall where the family will receive friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorials be directed to the First Presbyterian Building Fund, 2101 S. Jefferson St., Roanoke, Va. 24014. Carol said that she spent so much time at the church during her life that she wanted her final resting place to be next to George in the columbarium to be built as part of the current building project.

Although we did not see each other very much in recent years, Carol and Billy were among our first friends when we moved to Roanoke. Carol and Vickie were in ABWA together and were co-editors of the group's newsletter. With that great legal mind of hers, Carol helped Vickie and I draw up out first will and testament. I remember being at her home in the early morning hours when we watched the first moon walk together. I remember Billy clearing land around Windsor Lake. I remember a trip together to Johnson City to see a WKU-ETSU basketball game. I remember a 4th of July cook-out at the first house on the lake. I remember running an errand with young David and fighting with him to wear his seat belt. I remember a two or three year old Ken climbing a 20-25' ladder leaning against the house. I remember teaching Julie how to tie her shoes in a really different "mathematical" way.

I am so thankful for our "forever" friends, Carol and Billy.

With our deepest sympathy...thoughts and prayers,

Scott & Beth McDonald

My deepest sympathy to George and the entire Drewry family. Carol and I worked together at the Law Firm of Phillips, Doherty & Swanson for 10 years. She was such a joy to work with. We had a lot of laughs and sometimes tears. She was the hardest worker I've ever seen. She will be missed, but never forgotten.
