Roy Newby Obituary

Roy Lee Newby, affectionately known as "Scooby Doo," 67, of Pearisburg, Va., born April 18, 1942, in Bland, Va., went home to be with his Lord and Savior, on Thursday, October 22, 2009, after a courageous battle with many health problems at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his father, Posey Newby; his mother, Hazel Gillespie Newby Creasey; and a nephew, Travis Davis. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 41 years, Eleanor Mosburg Newby; his two sons, the joys of his life, and daughters-in-law, Randall (Randy) Lee Newby and Hilary, of Wytheville, Va., and Russell (Rusty) Newby and Bridget, of Narrows, Va.; his cherished grandchildren, Sydney Fields and Laney Newby, of Narrows, and Ryan Newby, of Wytheville; sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Jimmy Babb of Pulaski; his brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Cora Jean Newby, of Christiansburg; a special niece, Angie Davis, of Pearisburg, who was like a daughter; his three sisters-in-law and their husbands, Edna and William Martin, Hazel and Minor Bowles, of Pearisburg, and Joyce and Frank Longrie, of Pembroke. He also had many other special nieces and nephews.
"Scooby Doo" was an avid CB user, he enjoyed hunting, tinkering with cars and engines of any kind and he also loved to "wheel and deal." If anyone had a CB, lawn mower, gun, rifle, or pistol to sell, Roy was probably in the deal somewhere. He was also a huge fan of Jeff Gordon and enjoyed NASCAR racing. He loved his family and his beloved grandchildren more than anything and spent all the time he could with them and spoiled them rotten. Actually he loved all children and children loved him, he loved life, and was a true friend to all who knew him.
He proudly served his country for nine years, including a tour in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968, and achieved the rank of Sergeant in the United States Army. Roy was an active member of the local VFW Post #6000 in Narrows, Va. He loved country music and before his illness he was also known to flat foot on occasion. We all thought we would have many more years with our beloved Roy but it wasn't meant to be although we do have the assurance that he is happy and well in the arms of God.
The service for the celebration of his life will be conducted 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, 2009, at Cornerstone Pentecostal Holiness Church on College Avenue in Narrows, Va., with Pastor John Jenkins, Pastor Dan Kelley, and Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, Va., with Military Services by VFW Post #6000 in Narrows, American Legion Posts #311 in Pembroke, #68 in Narrows, and #145 in Peterstown. The family will receive friends at Cornerstone Pentecostal Holiness Church in Narrows, on Saturday evening, October 24, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting kendallfuneralhome.com.

Dearest Eleanor & family,
I am so shocked and saddened to read about the passing of Roy. It's hard to believe that you guys have been married 41 years. My mind goes back to us setting up your apartment when Roy was in service and you knew he was coming home someday. Hang on to your memories that you shared with him. Now, he has gone home to where there's no more pain, tears, sorrows and aches. My thoughts and prayers are with you now, and in the days ahead. We all will meet him again soon and very soon!

Our Deepest Sympathy To All of You,
May God place HIS loving arms around you and comfort you. In HIS name I ask. Amen
