Dexter Smith Obituary

Dexter Nye Smith, of Salem, passed away on October 25, 2009. He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on September 25, 1918 and was the son of the late Howard and Grace Smith. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He graduated from the University of Virginia as a chemist and was employed by Allied Chemical Company. After retiring, he moved to Salem. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Rucker Smith. He is survived by a niece, Penny Merricks and husband, Steve, of Daleville; and numerous other nieces and nephews. Special thanks to caregiver Betty Montgomery and her family for the loving care he received during the three years he was part of their family. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery in Lynchburg. The family will receive friends on Tuesday October 27, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Dexter's name to the Good Samaritan Hospice.
