LaVergne Woody Obituary

September 30, 1927 October 25, 2009 LaVergne Tuck Woody died on Sunday, October 25, 2009 after a lengthy illness.
LaVergne was a native of Patrick County, Va., the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Tuck and Hattie Rhodes Tuck. She and her sister, Dorothy Tuck Johnson, grew up in Stuart, where LaVergne was the Valedictorian of Stuart High School. She attended Mary Washington University and was graduated from Longwood College.
She met her husband, Rees Woody, when they both worked together at Fairystone State park in the summers. The were married in 1949, and in august, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
LaVergne began teaching school in Stuart, Va., but spent most of her 30 year professional career teaching English at Bassett High School. She shared here wisdom with multiple generations of students and was honored by them with yearbook dedications and teacher-of-the-year honors.
LaVergne served on the Board of the Patrick County Library and Museum. She was a member of the Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church, where she was the assistant organist for many years. She and her husband, Rees, were also members of the American Saddlebred Horseshow Association of Virginia (ASHAV). This spring there were inducted in the ASHAV Hall of Fame.
LaVergne is survived by her husband, N. Rees Woody; her daughter, Claudia L. Woody; her son, Norris R. Woody; daughter-in-law, Patricia Malone Woody; grandsons, Trey Woody and Patrick Rees; granddaughter, Melissa MacGregor and husband, Reed; and great-granddaughter, Michaela MacGregor. She is also survived by the extended family that she created out of love and inclusion, Zoe Griffith, Sandy Ball, Lynn Spruill, Brenda Redd, Steve Malik, Carolyn Vaughan, Jimmy Kindle and Pauline Moore.
In addition to her many other family members, LaVergne leaves behind a multitude of friends who have been touched by her kindness, courage, grace and love.
Arrangements are being handled by Moody Funeral Home, Stuart, Va. There will be a visitation at the funeral home on Tuesday night between 6 and 8 p.m. The funeral will be at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church in Meadows of Dan, Va. on Wednesday at 11 a.m. There will be alight lunch at the family home in Meadows of Dan following the graveside service.
