Samuel Hodges Obituary

Samuel Hairston Hodges, 70, of Roanoke, Va., died on Monday, October 26, 2009, after a long battle with leukemia. He was the son of Joseph W. and Lettie H. Hodges, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Martha Roberts Hodges; and their children, Susan Elizabeth Degaraff (John), Anne Carter Christley (Mark) and Samuel Hairston Hodges Jr. (Pennie); and 10 grandchildren, Sarah, Matthew, and John Degaraff, Aaron, Carter, Grace, Julia, and Emma Christley, and Ashley and Scott Hodges. He is also survived by his brothers, Randolph Cutchin Hodges (Betty Jo), Joseph Wilmer Hodges III (Judy), and Richard Lewis Hodges (Fran); and several nieces and nephews. Sam grew up in Roanoke and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1957. He took great delight in helping to plan the class reunions. A big Hokie fan, he attended Virginia Tech, where he was a member of the Corp of Cadets, and graduated with a degree in business administration in 1967 after serving in the United States Army. He was in the food business for many years and knew every restaurateur in the area. Sam was a devoted family man and a very active member of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder. Sam was beloved by his family and many friends. A celebration of his life will be held 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, 1837 Grandin Road, Roanoke, Va. 24015. In lieu of flowers, you may make memorial contributions to the organ fund at the church or to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel, 540-989-3131.

To the family,
My name is Gayle and I worked with Sam about 10 years at Southern Foods as his inside sales person. We sold alot of food in Va. together as a team. He also became a dear friend of mine. Sam was so special in so many ways of life to me. He was so kind and always a gentleman. He was mostly proud of his family in everyway. He will be missed and remembered always. I loved him with all my heart and will always keep him in my heart with all the wonderful memories of the good ole days.
Sincerely, Gayle Price (Dew)

I worked with Sam at Southern Foods all the years he was there. He was a very special kind and wonderful person. He was always happy. I hope he did not have to suffer during his last days. I know for sure that Sam is sitting at the feet of Jesus now and feeling no pain. I bought the 1992 Caprice that he used to drive at Southern Foods. We wore it out! I loved Sam. He was special to so many people at Southern Foods. He will be deeply missed.

Marty, Our deepest sympathies to you and your family at this time. We only knew Sam for our 16 day trip down the Rhine and Danube rivers early this year. It was a true pleasure to have him as part of our lives. Both Sharon and I learned how easy he is to love.

I knew "Big Sam" as a teenager growing friends with "Little Sam", he and Mrs. Hodges were always kind and welcomed me into their home. Mr. Hodges was a class act and a true gentleman, I wish you, his family, some peace in these rough times as "Big Sam" is in a much better place now.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
