Gussie Daugherty Obituary

Gussie Parr Daugherty, of Salem, Va., entered into her heavenly home on Tuesday, October 27, 2009. Born on August 19, 1924, to Edward and Mattie Parr, she was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Lester Parr; and her grandson, Nicholas Earl Miller. Left to cherish her memory are her devoted husband of 62 years Leonard Earl Daugherty; her loving children, Lynwood and wife, Brenda, of Rocky Mount, Gene and wife, JoAnn, of Salem, JoAnn and husband, Gary Wisecarver, and Kenneth (Kenny) and LeAnn, of Catawba; grandchildren, Brian and Aaron Daugherty, of Catawba; stepgranddaughter, Amy Webb, of Roanoke; in-laws include, Audrey Weaver, George and Margaret Daugherty, David Daugherty, Hazel Jayne, Edna Wilson and Mildred Daugherty; a large number of nieces and nephews; and a special new friend, Pam Belcher with Carilion Hospice. Gussie graduated from Andrew Lewis High School. She was employed by Newberrys of Salem, the Radford Arsenal, Yale & Town of Salem and 20+ years with CVS (formerly Super-X). She was a life time member, Trustee and Sunday School teacher at Locust Grove United Methodist Church. She was a faithful church member, always helping with the yard sales and was famous for her hot dog chili. At one point as a Sunday School teacher she had a class of all boys-most of them Daughertys! She loved God and her church. Services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2009, from Locust Grove United Methodist Church. Interment will be held at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 28, 2009, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Locust Grove United Methodist Church.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

My fondest memories of Gussie are the love she had for Earl "the Duge" and their dates. They loved going to the drive in movies and were always holding hands and hugging and kissing. She always looked so fine. As teenagers Joanne and I would ask her to buy us discounted makeup from the store. She was generous, loving and always opened her home to me. A genuine lady that will always be dear to me....love to Joanne, Duge and the rest of the family
