Richard Nuckols Obituary

Richard Spottswood Nuckols Sr., the son of the late Ernest Spottswood Nuckols and Sally Ester Gillock Nuckols, was born November 13, 1918 in Rockbridge County, Virginia at Maple Grove, the house in which he lived for the next seventy-five years. He dedicated himself to the family tradition of fair farming until 1988. During that time, he co-established Maple-Rock Distributors, was an active member in the Lexington Jaycees and Lions Club, was one of the founding members of the Tri-Brook Country Club, and was a life-long member of Manly Memorial Baptist Church. He loved to dance. He was an avid sports fan of his alma mater, Virginia Tech. Not only did he love ballroom dancing and took years of lessons with Arthur Murray Studios, but he was also an active member of Rockbridge Squares, with whom he traveled the county square dancing. In his younger years, he was quite an accomplished equestrian, showing three and five gated horses and riding with former trainer, Jimmy Hamilton. He spent many happy hours at his cabin on the Maury River. On June 13 of this year, he was preceded in death by his devoted wife of seventy-one years, Frances Virginia Murray Nuckols. Richard passed away October 30, 2009, surrounded by his beloved children, Richard Spottswood Nuckols Jr. and wife, Emily, Vicki Nuckols Kruse and W. Lawrence Nuckols. He leaves behind his loving grandchildren, Jennifer N. Brown and Husband, Eddie, J. Stuart Kruse and wife, Shermin, Keffrey S. Nuckols and wife, Gammon and Justin L. Nuckols; also his great-grandchildren, Tori Nuckols and Matthew R. Brown; and many cherished family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2009 at the Harrison Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at Harrison Funeral Home, with the Reverend Michael Fauber officiating. Burial will follow at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery. Arrangements by Harrison Funeral Home and Crematory, Lexington.
