Gordon Bennett Obituary

Gordon Benjamin Bennett, of Roanoke, Va., died Friday, November 6, 2009. He was born December 22, 1918, in Franklin County. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Velena Burgess Bennett, of Roanoke; a sister, Gwen Bennett Leake, of Hickory, N.C.; and special a nephew, Hansford Bennett Leake, also of Hickory. He was the son of Benjamin Alphonzo Bennett and Mayme Morris Bennett, of Rocky Mount, Va. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Hartwell Bennett; and sisters, Ann Bennett Stiff and Sally Madeline Bennett. Gordon was a resident of Virginia Veterans Care Center and had served in the United States Army in Japan following the end of the World War II. Gordon worked over 25 years for The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Board retiring in 1974, as Store Manager of the downtown. Campbell Avenue facility. The family wishes to acknowledge the outstanding and special care rendered to Gordon by the RN's of Third Floor West of Lewis Gale Medical Center. Visitation will be Sunday, November 8, 2009, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Ave SW. Graveside services will be held Monday, November 9, 2009, at 1 p.m. Franklin Memorial Park on US 220 in Rocky Mount, Va. Elder Junior Conner will be officiating. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel, 540-989-3131.

Mrs. Bennett,
I am so sorry for your loss. You and Mr. Bennett have a love for each other that seldom happens anymore, it seems. I will miss seeing you at the VVCC., and ordering your dinner,but I will never forget your sweet face.....May God Hold You Even Closer at this Time...
