Joyce Gillingham Obituary

Joyce D. Gillingham, 63, of New Castle, Va., mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, friend, and teacher left this life on Monday, November 16, 2009. She left much like she lived, with bravery and spunk. Joyce was born on June 23, 1946. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger D. Gillingham; father, Frank S. Dame; and a brother, Frank S. Dame Jr. She is survived and will be forever remembered and celebrated by her daughter, Jennifer Gillingham Sturm and husband, Jeff, of Stuarts Draft; son, Luke Stockton Gillingham, of Roanoke; grandchildren, Max Logan Sturm, Olivia Kate Sturm, and Christopher Noah Gillingham and his mother, LeeEllen Lowe; mother, Dorothy Dame; brothers, Rusty Dame and wife, Susan, and Randy Dame and wife, Elizabeth; sister, Bonnie Dame, all of Newport News; sister-in-law, Charlene Dame, of Colorado; and nieces and nephews too numerous to list, but each special to their aunt. We would like to thank the family, friends, and Carilion Hospice Team for sharing these days with us. Joyce loved her family, a shared laugh with friends, a clean house, and a good book. She touched the lives of so many children and their families through her 21 years of work as a Home Based Educator with Head Start as well as her volunteerism with the After Prom committee, Special Education Committee, and Emergency Foster Care. While she called the mountains home, she thought the ocean to be a glimpse of Heaven. May she find this to be true. A brief memorial service followed by a celebration of her life will be held 6:30 p.m. on Friday, November 20, 2009, at Mountain View Christian Church, New Castle, Va., with Raymond Christian officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Craig County Cancer Support Group, P.O. Box 38, New Castle, VA. 24127. Arrangements handled by Simpson Funeral Home and Crematory, 540-366-0707.

Jenn, I remember how wonderful it was when you and Jeff got married that I gained not only an instant sister but also your mom and Luke in a sometimes difficult to justify way :)

There was never a laugh quite like Joyce's, nor will there ever be again. How amazing a life she led to have touched so many others. I'm blessed to be one of them, for sure! I like how someone earlier put it - "Our loss is Heaven's gain." How true!

Love you so much!

Jennifer & Luke,
Our prayers and thoughts are with you during this time. I doubt if you remember us from your days in Smithield or when we visited you in New Castle, but we still think of you.

Jennifer and Luke
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Words cannot express how much your mom will be missed. She was a part of our lives through the Headstart progam for many years. She taught my son for his first year and those are lessons that will stay with him a lifetime. I know her smile will light up Heaven as it always lit up a room here on Earth. God Bless you both.

Dearest Jennifer, Luke, Christpher, Max and Olivia:
The pain in my heart can only be borne by the belief that I shall one day see your loved one again. I had the good fortune to hire Joyce 21 years ago as a Head Start Home Visitor for Craig County. Her creativity, sense of professionalism, respect for the families she served and belief in the Head Start Mission were outstanding. She was a bright star in the TAP Head Start family. She was a trusted co-worker and became a dear friend. Keep your heads high and know that you had a remarkable woman as Mother, Grandmother, Sister, and Daughter as an outstanding example to follow throughout your life. Your friend, Helen Ertman

To Luke & Jennifer, we knew both of your parents pretty well and U both were fortunate to have had such special parents. They were both great assets to the local community and never seemed to tire of helping anyone or anything in need. She was extremely proud of both her children but especially of you Luke and said so practically every time I saw her. She will be greatly missed by everyone. Godspeed!

Jennifer and Luke:
I only knew your Mom through Lauren, but know that she will be greatly missed by those who benefited from her selfless devotion to the children and their families that she helped. The Lord must have needed another Angel when he called her home. May the memories of her times with you give you comfort in the days ahead.

Jennifer, Luke and family,

Our family sends our love to you all. We loved Joyce very much. I will never forgot how she came to visit Levi after his initial brain surgery left him mute and paralyzed. She always believed in him and that he would overcome all and he has. She taught all three of my children and helped me learn how be an advocate for them. She was a wonderful person and I am so very, very sad that she is no longer with us here on Earth, but know our loss is Heaven's gain.
