Gustie Hollander Hedrick, 87, of Troutville, Va., died on Tuesday, November 24, 2009, in the Memory Care and Enrichment Center of Richfield Retirement Community from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Born on April 8, 1922, in Clinchco, Va., Gustie graduated from Crossnore School in Crossnore, N.C., and then completed her nursing education and was awarded her R.N. from Grace Hospital in Banner Elk, N.C. Most of her nursing career was spent in Roanoke, Va., where she was a top-notch and very popular private duty nurse. Her career spanned over 40 years, and she took pride in offering superb patient care. Many of her former patients stayed in touch with her, even after her retirement.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, L. Ray Hedrick, of Troutville, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Zelma and Charles Harris, of Pearisburg, Va.; one sister, Mamie Conkel, of Logan, Ohio; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Bunyan Hollander and Lettie Coffey Hollander; sisters, Lockie Rominger and Callie Foster; and brothers, Edwin Hollander, Roadman Hollander, Ivory Hollander, Paul Coffey and Mack Coffey.
A memorial service will be held at Oakey's East Chapel, 5188 Cloverdale Road, Roanoke, Va., on Monday, December 7, 2009 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Bansemer officiating.

I would always talk to Gustie while she lived over at MCEC because she was so precious. She always said that she was a "little angel."

Gustie was a sweet lady I worked w/ her as a member of the Rehabilitation team. She loved to be held, hugged, and loved on which was my pleasure. I never visited/worked w/ her that she did not tell me that she loved me too.

Aunt Gustie was a very special aunt to me. Her loving smile, kind words of encouragement and tender touch will always be a mark of her character and grace. She is next to the last of the Hollander family. There is only one son in the family heritage to carry on the line of Hollander.
