Winfred Hess Obituary

Winfred D. Hess Sr. (WD), 90, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, November 26, 2009. He is preceded in death by his son, Winfred D. Hess Jr. (Doug); parents, W.C. and Josie G. Hess; four brothers and four sisters. Mr. Hess served his country faithfully in the United States Navy during World War II, was a member of Windsor Hills Baptist Church, and retired from General Electric. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Arlene F. Hess; daughter, Bonnie Hess Elek and husband Louis; son, Gary L. Hess and wife Janice; grandson, Doug Elek and wife Carol; granddaughter, Lisa Pfahl and husband Todd; greatgrandson, Evan Elek; greatgranddaughters, Alexis Pfahl and Natalie Pfahl; brother, Clifford R. Hess; many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held December 5, 2009 at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oakeys South Chapel with the Rev C. Lawrence Dodson officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Salvation Army, 724 Dale Ave SE Roanoke, Va., 24013. Arrangements by Oakeys South Chapel, 540-989-3131.

I was saddened to hear of Winfred's passing. When I was a small child, Winfred took the time to teach me to draw several popular cartoon characters. I can still draw them exactly as he taught me, 40 years later. He was a special soul. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
