Edgar Barnett Obituary

Edgar Leon (Eddie) Barnett, 62, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2009. He served in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1969 as a Radioman 2nd Class and retired from Norfolk Southern with 38 years of service in 2007. Eddie was a member of the Williamson Road Masonic Lodge and the Kazim Shriner Tramp Unit. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda "Kay" Smith Barnett, who passed away in August 2001; and his parents, Earl James Collins Jr. and Mary B. Evans. He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Jamie Barnett, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jason and Corie Barnett, of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and John Meachum, of Princeton, W.Va.; grandchildren, Josh and Jami Barnett, Montana and Carter Meachum, and Melinda Dawn Barnett; and sisters and brother-in-law, Patricia and Rusty Casteele, of Ripplemead, Va., and Donna Barnett, of Hickory, N.C. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. on Sunday, December 6, 2009, in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Washington and the Rev. George Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Mill Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kazim Transportation Fund, 1628 Campbell Avenue, Roanoke, Va. 24016. The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 5, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Highway, Buchanan, Va., 540-254-3000.

I will always remember Eddie. He will always be carried with me in my heart. Eddie has watched me grow since the day i was born. I will miss him dearly. He was all around a great person who could put a smile on everyones face.

I can only imagine the great memories that you all experienced with Eddie through the years. The years that I new him was times that I will always vividly remember. They were sometimes setting around joking and sometimes pitching Horse Shoes. I can still hear him laughing. He truly enjoyed life. Eddie was a great man. I will miss him allot! I can only imagine the joy and the music that he now so enjoys. "Great Memories!"
